O sangomiño[2] ou árbore da rabia (Cornus sanguinea) é unha especie botánica pertencente á familia das Cornáceas. É nativa da meirande parte de Europa e Asia occidental, tamén se producen de norte a sur de Inglaterra, ao sur de Escandinavia e ao leste do mar Caspio. Aparece nalgúns puntos Galiza.

Cómpre non confundir esta especie co sanguiño (Frangula alnus).

Descrición

Trátase dun arbusto caducifolio de tamaño medio a grande que acada os de 2–6 m de altura, coas pólas e franzas escuras marrón averdadas. As follas son opostas, de 4–8 cm de lonxitude e 2–4 cm de ancho, ovadas a unha forma oblonga , de cor verde por riba, por baixo lixeiramente pálido, áspera e dura. As flores son hermafroditas, miúdas de (5–10 mm de diámetro), con catro pétalos de cor branca cremosa, en grupos de 3–5 cm de diámetro, e son polinizadas polos insectos. O froito é globoso cunha baga negra de 5–8 mm de diámetro, que contén unha soa semente.

Distribución

A súa área natural abrangue case toda Europa e Asia occidental; tamén se producen de norte a sur de Inglaterra, ao sur de Escandinavia e ao leste do mar Caspio. En Galiza medra en Valdeorras e nalgúns outros puntos.

Hábitat e ecoloxía

Require solos frescos e lixeiros, mais non presenta marcada preferencia pola súa natureza química. Gusta dos lugares húmidos e sombrizos. Atópase en terreos baixos ou de media montaña. Reprodúcese por semente e rebentos de raíz, o que fai posíbel que poida ocupar eficazmente áreas de terreo, establecéndose con alta densidade, polo que, dependendo das circunstancias, pode chegar a ser invasora.

Usos

Importante ecoloxicamente xa que os froitos son consumidos por algúns mamíferos e moitos paxaros. A madeira é de excelente calidade, de cor branca rosada, moi dura e resistente. Utilizábase para facer mangos de ferramentas e pequenas pezas torneadas. As pólas magras empregábanse en cestaría , e as máis grosas para titores ou espeques na xardinaxe. Tamén foron utilizadas para facer setas, de feito o arqueiro prehistórico Ötzi levaba setas de sangomiño. En canto ao seu uso medicinal, a cortiza desecada é un potente laxante; mentres que os froitos, cocidos en leite, empregábanse para combater a sarna. [3]
