O Robinson R66 é un helicóptero deseñado e construído por Robinson Helicopter Company. Ten cinco asentos, un compartimento de carga separado e está impulsado por un motor turboeixo Rolls-Royce RR300. O R66 é lixeiramente máis rápido e máis tranquilo que o Robinson R44, do cal deriva. O R66 recibiu tanto o certificado de tipo como o de produción da Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) o 25 de outubro de 2010.[3]

Desenvolvemento

Anunciado en 2007 o R66 foi deseñado para ser o primeiro produto da compañía impulsado por unha turbina e para ampliar o seu rango de helicópteros e poder competir con fabricantes máis grandes como Bell Helicopter e Eurocopter. A meirande parte do deseño do R66 está baseado no anterior R44 con motor de pistón.

Robinson comezou a recoller pedidos para R66 en febreiro de 2010. Ese ano iniciouse a produción preliminar e en 2011 a fabricación a grande escala. Os modelos existentes R22 e R44 continúan en produción.[4]

Unha versión de policía de catro asentos do R66 entrou en produción cun sistema de cámara infravermella de barrido frontal (FLIR), reflector, e altofalantes externos como equipamento stándar.[5]

En 2012 Robinson entregou 191 R66 mentres os seus competidores no sector dos helicópteros de turbina simple lixeiros entregaron 40 unidades. Ao redor do 70% da produción de R66 expórtase.[6] En 2014 o ritmo de produción baixou a uns dous R66 por semana,[7] fabricándose un total de 101 ese ano.[8] En 2015 Robinson fabricou tres R66 por semana. A compañía asinou un contrato con Rolls-Royce para que lle proporcionase 100 turbinas RR300 anualmente durante un período de dez anos.[9]

Rusia certificou o R66 en marzo de 2013[10] e o Canadá no mes de xuño do mesmo ano.[11] As certificacións da EASA europea e da CAAC chinesa chegaron no segundo cuarto de 2014.[12][13]

O R66 Turbine Marine con flotadores foi certificado pola FAA en novembro de 2014. Un xornalista piloto decribiu unha aterraxe en terra con el como "mellor que o R66 stándar". Os flotadores non poden equiparse nun R66 stándar.[14]

Un gancho de carga foi aprobado na Unión Europea e nos Estados Unidos no ano 2015. En decembro dese ano Robinson anunciou que vendera 700 R66.[15]

O 25 de xaneiro de 2017 Robinson anunciou que entregara o seu helicóptero número 12 000, un R66 ao turoperador Fly Karoo Air Services.[16] O 13 de xullo dese ano a compañía anunciou a certificación do R66 Turbine Newscopter (R66 ENG).[17]

O 17 de xullo de 2017 Robinson introduciu a batería de fosfato de iones de litio TB17 como equipamento adicional. A batería pesa 16 libras, sendo máis lixeira que a anterior batería stándar de 42 lb e a de alta capacidade de 52 lb.[18]
