A reserva da biosfera Vidzeme norte é a única reserva da biosfera de Letonia. Cubre unha área de 60 quilómetros sobre o Golfo de Riga e o interior da rexión de Vidzeme, veciña a Estonia.

Ecosistema

Flora

A turfeira alta de maior extensión dos Estados bálticos pódese atopar nesta reserva. Asemade, o seu litoral está poboado dunha continuación de prados costeiros. Os cantís ananos de Skanaiskalns e o río Salaca rematan nunha área de cantís vermellos, Pietrags.[1]

Fauna

Unha colonia de cegoñas brancas domina a área de Matisi con regularidade.

Sociedade e economía

A reserva da biosfera Vidzeme norte é a única zona con protección especial no país, cubrindo 457,600 hectáreas de terreo e 16,750 hectáreas de mar. Esta condición foi aprobada o 15 de decembro de 1997, recoñecendo o seu valor e o cumprimento dos requisitos do contexto que aporta a UNESCO para este tipo de reservas con recoñecemento internacional. A reserva estende o seu valor socio-económico ao incluír non só áreas de relevancia natural senón tamén plantacións dendrolóxicas, elementos de valor xeolóxico e xeomórfico así como escenarios históricos letóns.

Lexislación

A reserva da biosfera acolle no seu territorio espazos protexidos por outras medidas lexislativas e de acción, como é:

  • As torres de observación ornitolóxicas nos prados costeiros da biosfera.
  • A pesca tradicional no lago Burtnieki.
  • Cova de área de Liv no río Svetupe, recoñecida por acoller ritos pagáns anteriores ao século XVII [2]
  • Restaurantes de lamprea.
  • O museo de Munchausen en Dunte.
  • A zona antiga de Rujiena, exemplo de clasicismo despoxado.
  • Salacgriva, o museo de Salacgriva, festival dos pescadores en Salacgriva e o festival Positivus.
  • Limbazi e o seu museo da prata.
