Pannotia estaba centrado no Polo sur

Pannotia é un supercontinente que probablemente existiu desde hai uns 600 millóns de anos até hai uns 540 millóns de anos, a finais do período Precámbrico. Antes de Pannotia, o anterior supercontinente foi Rodinia, e o posterior (e último até a data), Panxea. Pannotia foi descrito por primeira vez por Ian W. D. Dalziel en 1997. Tamén se coñece como Supercontinente Vendiano e Gran Gondwana. Este último termo foi proposto por Stern en 1994 e recoñece que o supercontinente Gondwana, que se formou a finais do Precámbrico, foi unha vez moito máis grande.[1]

Formación

O anterior supercontinente Rodinia fragmentouse hai uns 750 millóns de anos[2] en tres continentes: Proto-Laurasia (que á súa vez fragmentouse, aínda que finalmente se reensamblou como Laurasia), o cratón continental do Congo e Proto-Gondwana (toda Gondwana excepto o cratón do Congo e Atlántica). Proto-Laurasia virou cara ao Polo sur, mentres que Proto-Gondwana fixo o propio e o cratón do Congo situouse entre ambos, fai ao redor de 600 millóns de anos. Isto formou Pannotia. Con tanta masa de terra en torno ao Polo sur, probablemente foi unha das épocas da historia xeolóxica con máis glaciares.[3]

Pannotia tiña forma de "V" orientada cara ao nordés. Dentro da "V" atopábase o océano Pantalasa, que no futuro converteríase no océano Pacífico. Había unha dorsal oceánica no medio do océano Pantalasa. Fóra da "V", rodeando a Pannotia, localizábase un gran océano antigo, o denominado océano Panafricano.

Fragmentación

Pannotia tivo unha curta duración.[2] Os movementos que formaron Pannotia continuaron, producindo a súa dislocación. Hai uns 540 millóns de anos, só uns 60 millóns de anos despois de terse formado, Pannotia desintegrouse en catro continentes: Laurentia, Báltica, Siberia e Gondwana Máis tarde, estes continentes se recombinarían para formar o máis recente dos supercontinentes, Panxea[4]
