Un número pentagonal é un número figurado que estende o concepto de cadrados perfectos e números triangulares ao pentágono. Está estensión non é total, o modelo para a construción dos números pentagonais non ten simetrías. O n-ésimo número pentagonal p_n é o número de puntos distintos nun modelo de puntos que consiste nos contornos de pentágonos regulares que comparten un vértide de lados de 1 punto ata de lados de n puntos. Por exemplo, o terceiro está formado a partir de contornos que comprenden 1, 5 e 10 puntos, pero o 1 e o 3 dos 5 coinciden con 3 dos 10, deixando 12 puntos distintos, 10 en forma de pentágono e 2 dentro.

para n ≥ 1. Os primeiros números pentagonais son:

1, 5, 12, 22, 35, 51, 70, 92, 117, 145, 176, 210, 247... (secuencia A000326 na OEIS).

O n-ésimo número pentagonal pódese escribir como a suma dos enteirtos dende n ata 2n-1. Tamén se verifican as seguintes relacións:

p_{n}=p_{n-1}+3n-2=2p_{n-1}-p_{n-2}+3

Os números pentagonais relaciónanse cos números triangulares, xa que o n-ésimo número pentagonal é un terzo do (3n − 1) número triangular. Ademais, se T_n é o n-ésimo número triangular:

p_{n}=T_{n-1}+n^{2}=T_{n}+2T_{n-1}=T_{2n-1}-T_{n-1}

Os números pentagonais xeneralizados obtéñense da fórmula anterior, cando n toma os valores da seguinte secuencia 0, 1, −1, 2, −2, 3, −3, 4... , producindo a secuencia:

0, 1, 2, 5, 7, 12, 15, 22, 26, 35, 40, 51, 57, 70, 77, 92, 100, 117, 126, 145, 155, 176, 187, 22, 21 247, 260, 287, 301, 330, 345... (secuencia A001318 na OEIS).

Os números pentagonais xeneralizados son de importantancia para a teoría das particións enteiras de Euler, como se expresa no seu teorema dos números pentagonais .

Outra forma de ver os números pentagonais xeneralizados, (cando é -n (valor negativo)) é coller a construción do número pentagonal n+2 e restarlle os puntos do pentágono máis externo.

Outras propiedades

$p_{n}$ para n>0 é o número de combinacións diferentes de $n+8$ en n partes que non inclúen 2 ou 3.
$p_{n}$ é a suma dos n primeiros números naturais congruentes con 1 mod 3.
$p_{8n}-p_{8n-1}=p_{2n+2}-p_{2n-2}$

Probas de números pentagonais

Dado un número enteiro positivo x, para probar se é un número pentagonal (non xeneralizado) podemos calcular

n={\frac {{\sqrt {24x+1}}+1}{6}}.

O número x é pentagonal se e só se n é un número natural. Nese caso x é o n-ésimo número pentagonal.

Para os números pentagonais xeneralizados, basta con comprobar se $24 x + 1$ é un cadrado perfecto.

Para os números pentagonais non xeneralizados, ademais da proba do cadrado perfecto, tamén se require comprobar se

{\sqrt {24x+1}}\equiv 5\mod 6

As propiedades matemáticas dos números pentagonais aseguran que estas probas sexan suficientes para demostrar ou refutar a pentagonalidade dun número. ^[1]
