A N-acetilglicosamina (GlcNAc ou NAG), é un derivado acetilado do aminoazucre D-glicosamina que, á súa vez, é un derivado da glicosa. Quimicamente, a N-acetilglicosamina é un aminoazucre no cal o grupo amino situado no carbono 2 está acetilado por incorporación dun grupo (-CO-CH₃) ^[1]^[2].

Importancia biolóxica

A N-acetilglicosamina adoita atoparse polimerizada formando polisacáridos, principalmente de carácter estrutural. Algunhas das moléculas das que forma parte son:

A quitina, un polisacárido composto por unidades de N-acetilglicosamina, que forma parte do exoesqueleto dos artrópodos e da parede celular dos fungos.
O peptidoglicano, un heteropolisacárido compoñente da parede celular bacteriana, onde está unida ao ácido N-acetilmurámico.
Os glicosaminoglicanos, como o ácido hialurónico do tecido conxuntivo ou o queratán sulfato, heparán sulfato.
Algúns glicoesfingolípidos. Neles a N-acetilglicosamina está unida ao hidroxilo 1 da esfingosina. Forman parte da membrana plasmática. Igual que outros glicolípidos de membrana, a N-acetilglicosamina intervén no recoñecemento celular, a adhesión celular e na recepción de sinais químicos.
Algunhas glicoproteínas, tamén compoñentes das membranas celulares, conteñen N-acetilglicosamina unida ao grupo amino da asparaxina. Os grupos sanguíneos están en parte determinados por este e outros glícidos^[3]

A N-acetilglicosamina foi proposta para o tratamento de enfermidades autoinmunes.^[4]^[5]
