Unha fábrica é un lugar físico ou virtual onde se produce algún obxecto, material ou servizo. Normalmente o vocábulo «fábrica» asóciase cun lugar físico onde se procesan materias primas, pero na economía moderna tamén se estende o concepto aos lugares virtuais onde se xeran servizos, por extensión do proceso de transformación de ideas en servizos útiles, como software ou capacitación.

Hai de distintos tipos e tamaños. Actualmente as fábricas van substituíndo a man de obra por tecnoloxía para reducir custos e aumentar a produtividade.

Utilización do termo fábrica

O vocábulo fábrica tal e como o seu uso é relativamente moderno, xa que a fabricación e os procesos industriais apareceron coa Revolución industrial, na segunda metade do século XVIII.

O vocábulo fábrica ten un uso anterior no campo da arquitectura e construción. Chámase «fábrica» á edificación construída a base de módulos dispostos ou organizados co fin de soportar a estrutura. Dentro desta definición encóntranse todas as formas de cachotaría, típico sistema construtivo dende a expansión romana en Europa. Durante o Renacemento coñecíase como fábrica ao edificio mesmo, independentemente da súa modalidade de construción. En conclusión, fábrica corresponde á composición dos muros e paredes de ladrillos ou pedras que compoñen a estrutura da edificación.

Fabricación

A fabricación transforma as materias primas en produtos. Dende unha camisa ata un avión, case todo o que usamos está fabricado. Pode facerse a man (de forma artesanal) ou a base de maquinaria (de forma automática, máis ou menos informatizada).

Produción en serie

En cada lugar, os traballadores (ou as máquinas) realizan a mesma actividade repetidamente con produtos semi-elaborados, que van avanzando dun elo a outro da cadea. Deste modo complétanse moitas máis unidades ao día que se un traballador se dedicase a realizar unha peza completamente dende o principio ata o final.
