Courier 1B foi un satélite artificial do Exército dos Estados Unidos lanzado o 4 de outubro de 1960 mediante un foguete Thor Ablestar desde a rampla 17B Cabo Cañaveral.[2][4] Un satélite xemelo, Courier 1A, foi lanzado o 18 de agosto dese mesmo ano, pero o foguete portador non conseguiu poñelo en órbita. Un terceiro satélite, Courier 1C, foi construído pero non lanzado.[4]

Características

Courier 1B foi lanzado para probar métodos de comunicación a alta velocidade, ata 100.000 palabras por minuto, desde o espazo. O satélite foi proposto en setembro de 1958, dous meses antes do lanzamento do satélite SCORE. Courier 1B tiña moita maior capacidade que este último, do que se considera sucesor, e foi o primeiro satélite de comunicacións en basarse unicamente en células solares (19.200 recubrían a súa superficie) como fonte de enerxía, alimentando baterías de níquel-cadmio e producindo ata 60 W de potencia. Tiña forma de esfera de 129,5 cm de diámetro e pesaba 225 kg. Levaba a bordo dous transmisores de FM de 2 W funcionando a entre 1700 e 1800 MHz e un subsistema de baliza en VHF de 50 mW de potencia. Usaba tamén catro receptores de estado sólido para a banda entre 1800 e 1900 MHz e cinco grabadoras de cinta para almacenar datos e reproducilos. Catro das grabadoras eran dixitais, cunha capacidade total de 13,2 Mb (4 minutos de gravación a 55 Kbps). A outra era unha grabadora analóxica de 4 minutos de capacidade cun rango de entre 300 e 50.000 Hz. Ó longo do ecuador do satélite podíanse atopar catro antenas a intervalos de 90 graos. Tamén contiña dúas antenas de microondas, un xerador transistorizado de telemetría, un diplexador VHF e un decodificador de comandos. [2][4]

Tras ser lanzado e completar unha órbita, o satélite retransmitiu unha mensaxe dirixida ás Nacións Unidas do presidente Eisenhower enviado desde Fort Monmouth, onde se fabricou o Courier 1B, e recibido nunha estación en Porto Rico.[2][4]

Despois de 17 días en órbita o satélite deixou de responder a comandos enviados desde terra. A causa máis probable foi a desincronización do reloxo interno do que dependían dos códigos de acceso do satélite, polo que este deixou de responder ao que interpretaba como intentos de acceso ilexítimos. Durante o seu tempo de funcionamento transmitiu máis de 50 millóns de palabras de teletipo.[2][4]
