O Castelo de Montsoreau é un palacio francés de estilo feudal e renacentista que se atopa ao longo do Loira, na comuna de Montsoreau, departamento de Maine e Loira, xunto á estrada que une Fontevraud-l'Abbaye a Candes-Saint-Martin . Inicialmente xogou o papel de fortaleza estratéxica, controlando o tráfico entre os ríos Chinon e Saumur.

O Castelo de Montsoreau foi clasificado como Monumento Nacional polo Ministerio de Cultura francés en 1862.[1] O castelo de Montsoreau está clasificado como parte do Val do Loira, Patrimonio da Humanidade pola UNESCO no 2000.[2]

Desde o ano 2016, o Castelo de Montsoreau acolle o Castelo de Montsoreau - Museo de Arte Contemporánea.[3][4][5][6]

Historia

O nome de Montsoreau aparece por primeira vez nunha carta, datada en 1089, na forma do latín: castrum de Monte Sorello. Foi entón propiedade de Guillaume de Montsoreau, vasalo dos condes de Anjou. En 1152 estivo rodeado por Henrique II de Inglaterra.

Foi Xoán de Chambes, conselleiro do Carlos VII, rei de Francia que construíu o actual castelo no século XV. O logis presenta unha fachada no Loira e outra no patio interior, onde se pode ver unha característica torre renacentista.

Alexandre Dumas fixo famoso o nome de Monsoreau (escrito sen t) na súa novela La Dame de Monsoreau, baseada nas escapadas amorosas dunha muller que ocupara o castelo durante o reinado de Henrique III. A historia puxo en marcha os amores descontentos de Diane de Méridor, o seu verdadeiro nome Françoise de Maridor, esposa de Charles de Chambes, conde de Monsoreau e o seu amante Louis de Bussy d'Amboise.

Arquitectura

Ata o final do século XIX, o castelo foi abandonado e en ruínas. En 1862 foi clasificado como monumento nacional, aínda que as fotos da época mostran un estado de abandono significativo, con portas e ventás rotas e terras mal mantidas. O antigo recinto do castelo foi inscrito como un monumento histórico por decreto do 6 de outubro de 1938, aínda que o castelo renacentista xa fora listado en 1862. Os restos da capela foron inscritos o 3 de decembro de 1930. O Palais de la Sénéchaussée no antigo recinto do castelo, foi rexistrado o 6 de outubro de 1938.
