Ralph l'Écuyer (en anglais : Ralph the Staller, Radulf stalre ou Ralph the Englishman) (vers 1010 – vers 1069), fut seigneur de Gaël en Bretagne, et comte de Norfolk et Suffolk (ou d'Est-Anglie) en Royaume d'Angleterre durant la domination anglo-saxonne puis après la conquête normande de l'Angleterre sous la domination normande.

Biographie

Ralph est le fils d'un homme de la lignée des Montfort-Gaël (duché de Bretagne) et sa mère est peut-être anglaise, car il a un frère prénommé Godwin. Son père serait un frère anonyme de l'évêque homonyme Raoul l'évêque d'Aleth[1]. Ralph et son fils sont d'ailleurs désignés comme anglicus dans des chartes ducales bretonnes. Il serait né dans le Norfolk vers 1010, mais son lieu de naissance a peut-être été extrapolé par sa tenure ultérieure de l'Est-Anglie. Les historiens ont fait l'hypothèse que son père serait venu en Angleterre avec Emma de Normandie lors de son mariage à Æthelred II d'Angleterre en 1002.

À partir de 1050, il atteste des chartes d'Édouard le Confesseur et appartient à sa maison royale, mais sa fonction exacte n'est pas connue précisément. Dans certaines chartes il est désigné « écuyer », mais c'est un titre générique pour les membres importants de la suite royale. Il est aussi désigné comme sénéchal et courtisan. Il obtient du roi de vastes terres concentrées dans le Norfolk, le Suffolk et le Lincolnshire.

Durant la conquête normande de 1066, il se rallie à la cause de Guillaume le Conquérant. Celui-ci le nomme 1er comte de Norfolk et Suffolk (ou comte d'Est-Anglie) dès le début de son règne[2] (très probablement 1067). Les terres appartenaient auparavant à Gyrth Godwinson.

La dernière trace certaine qu'il laisse est une attestation d'une charte de confirmation de donation de Guillaume le Conquérant à l'abbaye de Saint-Riquier en . Il meurt avant la déposition d'Æthelmær, évêque d'Est-Anglie au printemps 1070. Un comte Ralph est témoin d'une charte en 1069, mais il s'agit peut-être de son fils, car Orderic Vital relate que c'est ce dernier qui défend Norwich à l'été 1069 contre une invasion danoise.

Il a été suggéré que sa femme pourrait être Eadgifu la Belle, mais la Chronique anglo-saxonne mentionne que sa femme est bretonne. Il laisse deux fils, Ralph de Guader qui lui succède, et Hardouin.

Ralph l'Écuyer avait patronné les abbayes Saint-Riquier (comté de Ponthieu) et St. Benet de Holme (Norfolk).
