NGC 3309 est une très vaste* galaxie lenticulaire située dans la constellation de l'Hydre. Sa vitesse par rapport au fond diffus cosmologique est de 4 419 ± 24 km/s, ce qui correspond à une distance de Hubble de 65,2 ± 4,6 Mpc (∼213 millions d'al)[1]. Elle a été découverte par l'astronome britannique John Herschel en 1835.

À ce jour, 17 mesures non basées sur le décalage vers le rouge (redshift) donnent une distance de 54,388 ± 13,089 Mpc (∼177 millions d'al)[4], ce qui est à l'intérieur des valeurs de la distance de Hubble. Notons cependant que c'est avec la valeur moyenne des mesures indépendantes, lorsqu'elles existent, que la base de données NASA/IPAC calcule le diamètre d'une galaxie et qu'en conséquence le diamètre de NGC 3309 pourrait être d'environ 113 kpc (∼369 000 al) si on utilisait la distance de Hubble pour le calculer.

Groupe de NGC 3314B

Selon une étude publiée par A.M. Garcia en 1993, NGC 3309 fait partie du groupe de NGC 3314B. Ce groupe comprend au moins 30 galaxies dont NGC 3305, NGC 3314B (PGC 33532), NGC 3316 et NGC 3336[5].

NGC 3309 et donc toutes les galaxies du groupe de NGC 3314B font partie de l'amas de l'Hydre (Abell 1060)[6]. L'amas de l'Hydre est l'amas dominant du superamas de l'Hydre-Centaure[7].
