Une décade, du latin decas, lui-même issu du grec δεκάς, est, en général, un ensemble de dix objets.

Durée

Pendant la Révolution française, le calendrier républicain a ainsi remplacé la semaine de sept jours par la décade, période de dix jours comme dans le calendrier attique, qui se terminait par le décadi. De nos jours, le terme s'applique à une période de dix jours couvrant à peu près le tiers d'un mois. « La première décade du mois » désigne les dix premiers jours, du 1 au 10 du mois, la seconde décade les dix suivants, du 11 au 20, et la troisième décade les huit à onze derniers.

Selon Grevisse, « Au début du XXe siècle, [décade] a pris, peut-être sous l'influence de l'anglais, le sens de « période de dix ans », ce qui n'a rien d'une impropriété. Ce sens paraissait bien installé, même chez les écrivains les plus soigneux. Peut-être parce que décade était revenu dans le vocabulaire courant pendant la guerre de 1940 pour désigner une période de dix jours à propos des produits rationnés, on a suscité à ce mot, pour « période de dix ans », un rival à peu près inusité jusqu'alors, décennie. Cette offensive a été efficace et décennie semble l'emporter dans l'usage[1] ». Durant la première moitié du XXe siècle Robert Brasillach, Georges Duhamel, Henry de Montherlant, André Maurois et autres ont ainsi employé le mot « décade » au sens d'une période de dix ans mais certains grammairiens considèrent aujourd'hui cet usage comme fautif[2] et l'Académie française estime que « Ce mot ne doit pas être confondu avec décennie[3] » et que donc « on se gardera d’employer décade avec ce sens[4] ». Le mot décennie, créé à la fin du XIXe siècle à partir de l'adjectif « décennal »[5], désigne sans ambiguïté une période de dix ans.
