La comédie larmoyante est un genre théâtral intermédiaire entre la comédie et la tragédie inventé par Nivelle de La Chaussée dans la seconde moitié du XVIII^e siècle.

Montrant des personnages de condition privée, vertueux ou tout près de l'être, dans une action sérieuse, grave, parfois pathétique, et qui excite à la vertu en attendrissant sur ses infortunes et en faisant applaudir à son triomphe, ce genre introduisit dans la comédie un pathétique qui fit donner l’appellation ironique de comédies larmoyantes à des œuvres inhabituelles qualifiées tour à tour de tragi-comédies, de tragédies bourgeoises.

Dans ce type de comédie sentimentale, la tragédie imminente est résolue à la fin, parmi des réconciliations et des profusions de larmes. Le dénouement, lorsqu’il est malheureux, permet néanmoins au public de voir les héros et les héroïnes qui ont souffert obtenir un triomphe moral.

On a beaucoup disputé au XVIII^e siècle pour savoir si Nivelle de La Chaussée, qui a pleinement développé ce genre dans Mélanide, avait réellement créé un genre nouveau ou s’il n’avait fait que renouveler un genre ancien et oublié, mais la comédie larmoyante est une suite et un effet du développement naturel de la poésie dramatique française. La comédie ne devait plus susciter le rire, mais les larmes. L’innovation a consisté à détruire la fine distinction existant alors entre la tragédie et la comédie dans la littérature française. Le nouveau genre équivoque dans lequel le passage subit du comique au sérieux est souvent forcé ne fut pas accepté sans opposition. La comédie larmoyante paraissait marquer le retour du théâtre sans règles d’avant Corneille, Racine et Molière.

Nivelle de La Chaussée fut néanmoins bientôt imité parmi des écrivains de grand talent comme Diderot, Beaumarchais et Sedaine. Le premier fixa les lois du genre dramatique mixte qui devint bientôt le drame moderne et le second adopta ses vues. Le Père de famille de Diderot, l’Eugénie de Beaumarchais, marquent la transformation de plus en plus sensible de la comédie larmoyante en drame. En ce sens, la comédie larmoyante a ouvert, en brouillant les distinctions entre la comédie et la tragédie, la voie au drame bourgeois, la forme de comédie réaliste annoncée par le Fils naturel de Diderot (publié en 1757, joué en 1771). Mercier s’est également considéré comme défenseur de ce genre.

En Italie, où la littérature française du XVIII^e siècle a exercé la plus grande influence, l’abbé Chiari a mis la comédie pathétique (commedia fiebile) à la mode mais Goldoni et Carlo Gozzi s’efforcèrent de réagir par des compositions d’un autre style contre cette disposition du goût.
