Viimeinen elokuva (The Last Picture Show) on yhdysvaltalainen mustavalkoinen draamaelokuva vuodelta 1971 ja ohjaajansa Peter Bogdanovichin tunnetuimpia teoksia. Sen käsikirjoitus perustuu Larry McMurtryn vuonna 1966 ilmestyneeseen romaaniin The Last Picture Show.

Juoni

Elokuvan tarina sijoittuu texasilaiseen pikkukaupunkiin marraskuusta 1951 lokakuuhun 1952. Nuoret Sonny Crawford (Timothy Bottoms) ja Duane Jackson (Jeff Bridges) käyvät high schoolin viimeistä luokkaa. Duane seurustelee Jacy Farrow’n kanssa, joka on kaupungin rikkaimman perheen kuvankaunis tyttö (Cybill Shepherd esikoisroolissaan). Molemmat pojat toimivat kapteeneina koulunsa heikosti menestyvässä amerikkalaisen jalkapallon joukkueessa, eikä asioita tee helpommaksi se, että Sonny aloittaa suhteen joukkueen valmentajan vaimon kanssa.

Pikkukaupunki on tekemässä kuolemaa, kun sen väestö muuttaa työn perässä isompiin naapurikaupunkeihin. Sonny ja Duane elävät samaan aikaan nuoruutensa loppua erilaisine seikkailuineen, edessään vastuun ottaminen itsestään. Vastaanotto

Ben Johnson sai roolistaan parhaan miessivuosan ja Cloris Leachman parhaan naissivuosan Oscar-palkinnot. Lisäksi elokuva oli Oscar-ehdokas useassa sarjassa: paras elokuva, ohjaus, sovitettu käsikirjoitus, kuvaus, ja Jeff Bridges ja Ellen Burstyn olivat sivuosa-Oscarien ehdokkaina.

Viimeinen elokuva valittiin vuonna 1998 Yhdysvaltojen kongressin kirjaston National Film Registryyn, johon kootaan esteettisesti, historiallisesti tai kulttuurisesti merkittäviä amerikkalaiselokuvia.[1] The New York Timesin kriitikot valitsivat sen vuonna 2004 yhdeksi kaikkien aikojen tuhannesta parhaasta elokuvasta maailmassa.[2]

Jatko-osa ja ohjaajan versio

Vuonna 1990 Bogdanovich toi ensi-iltaan Viimeisen elokuvan jatko-osan Texasville – unohduksen maa, joka myös perustui McMurtryn tekstiin, vuonna 1987 julkaistuun romaaniin Texasville. Viimeisen elokuvan näyttelijöistä mukana ovat Jeff Bridges, Cybill Shepherd, Timothy Bottoms, Cloris Leachman, Eileen Brennan, Randy Quaid, Sharon Ullrick ja Barc Doyle.

Vuonna 1992 Bogdanovich teki elokuvasta ohjaajan leikkauksen, johon hän otti mukaan seitsemän minuuttia kohtauksia, jotka Columbia Pictures oli vuonna 1971 vaatinut poistamaan pitääkseen elokuvan alle kahden tunnin mittaisena.

Elokuvat esitetään viimeisinä Yle Teeman teemalauantain elokuvina 22. huhtikuuta 2017, ja The Last Picture Show’sta esitetään ohjaajan leikkaus.[3][4]
