Stanley Lloyd Miller (7. maaliskuuta 1930 Oakland, Kalifornia, Yhdysvallat – 20. toukokuuta 2007 National City, Kalifornia, Yhdysvallat) oli yhdysvaltalainen kemisti, joka käänteentekevillää elämän syntyä koskevilla tutkimuksillaan osoitti, että elämän kannalta tärkeitä molekyyleja voidaan yksinkertaisilla kemiallisilla prosesseilla tuottaa epäorgaanisista aineista.[1][2]

Elämä ja ura

Miller suoritti kemian perusopinnot Kalifornian yliopistossa Berkeleyssä, minkä jälkeen hän väitteli tohtoriksi Chicagon yliopistossa. Miller siirtyi Columbian yliopistoon vuonna 1955. Vuonna 1960 hänen Chicagon yliopiston opettajansa Harold Urey palkkasi hänet Kalifornian yliopiston uudelle San Diegon kampukselle, jossa hän vietti uransa loppuosan. Hänestä tuli siellä kemian laitoksen professori vuonna 1968.[1][2]

Vuonna 1953 Miller, joka oli tuolloin 23-vuotias jatko-opiskelija, ja Urey suorittivat Chicagon yliopistossa kuuluisan Millerin-Ureyn kokeen, joka silloisen tiedon mukaan simuloi varhaisen maapallon ilmakehän koostumusta. Miller ja Urey onnistuivat tuottamaan koelaitteistollaan useita elämän kannalta tärkeitä molekyyleja, kuten aminohappoja, sokereita ja nukleotidiemäksiä.[1][2]

San Diegossa Miller kehitti kuuluisaa koettaan ja osoitti, miten yhä useammat elämän käyttämät peruskemikaalit olisivat voineet syntyä luonnollisissa olosuhteissa. Hän tai muut eivät kuitenkaan kyenneet osoittamaan uskottavasti, kuinka nämä kemikaalit olisivat voineet muodostua eläviksi soluiksi tai makromolekyyleiksi.[2]
