Rosella Hightower

Rosella Hightower vuonna 1961.

Rosella Hightower (10. tammikuuta 1920 Oklahoma, Yhdysvallat – 4. marraskuuta 2008 Cannes, Ranska) oli yhdysvaltalainen balettitanssija, joka tanssi sekä Yhdysvalloissa että Euroopassa.[1]

Hightower syntyi Oklahoman Ardamoressa vanhempiensa Charles Edgar ja Eula May Flanning Hightowerin ainoana lapsena. Hänen juurensa juontuvat alkuperäiskansa choctaweihin. Perhe muutti Missourin Kansas Cityyn Rosella Hightowerin ollessa lapsi, ja hän sai siellä varhaisen tanssikoulutuksensa.[2]

Vuonna 1937 Léonide Massine vieraili Kansas Cityssä ja pyysi Hightoweria Monte Carloon perustamaansa tanssiryhmään. Hightower pääsi tanssijaksi Ballet Russe de Monte Carloon, joka siirtyi toisen maailmansodan alettua New Yorkiin. Siellä Hightower liittyi vuonna 1941 Ballet Theatreen (American Ballet Theatren edeltäjä), mistä hän jatkoi vuonna 1946 de Basil Balletiin. Vuonna 1947 Hightower siirtyi chileläissyntyisen markiisi George de Cuevasin perustamaan Grand Ballet de Monte Carloon.[2]

De Cuevasin kuoltua vuonna 1961 tanssiryhmä hajaantui ja Hightower päätti vähitellen uransa tanssijana ja asettui Cannesiin. Siellä hän perusti vuonna 1962 oman balettikoulunsa (Centre de Danse Classique), josta tuli Euroopan johtavia alallaan. Vuosina 1969–1972 Hightower johti Marseillen oopperan balettia, 1973–1974 Nancyn balettia, 1980–1983 Pariisin oopperabalettia ja 1985–1986 Milanon La Scala -balettia.[2]

Hightower oli vuodesta 1958 naimisissa ranskalaisen taiteilijan Jean Robierin kanssa. Heidän ainoa lapsensa syntyi vuonna 1955 ja on myös toiminut tanssijana.[2]

Vuonna 1975 Ranskan hallitus myönsi Hightowerille Kunnialegioonan ritarin arvonimen (Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur).[2]
