Piirilääkäri

Piirilääkäri oli aiemmin valtion palveluksessa oleva virkalääkäri. Suomen ensimmäinen piirilääkäri palkattiin Pohjanmaalle vuonna 1749. 1800-luvun alussa piirilääkäreitä oli 12 ja sata vuotta myöhemmin 53. Piirilääkärin päätehtävä oli huolehtia oman piirinsä alueella asuvan väestön terveyden- ja sairaanhoidosta. Lisäksi piirilääkärin tehtäviin kuului kotieläinten lääkintähuolto. Piirilääkärit olivat saaneet monipuolisen lääketieteellisen koulutuksen. Piirilääkärijärjestelmä lakkautettiin vuonna 1939.[1][2] Kaupunginlääkärien palkkaaminen 1840-luvulta alkaen paransi lääkäritilannetta.[3] Esimerkiksi Turkuun tuli piirilääkäri vuonna 1754, sairaala 1759 ja porvarien kustantama kaupunginlääkäri 1755. Kaupunginlääkäri muuttui vuonna 1827 kaupungin palkkaamaksi.[4]
