Charles “Lucky“ Luciano (alun p. Salvatore Lucania) (24. marraskuuta 1897 Lercara Friddi, Sisilia, Italia – 26. tammikuuta 1962 Napoli, Italia) oli merkittävä amerikanitalialainen gangsteri ja mafioso.[1] Hänellä oli keskeinen rooli nykyaikaisen Yhdysvaltain mafian kehittymisessä.[2]

Ura

Luciano syntyi Sisiliassa vuonna 1897. Perhe muutti New Yorkiin, Lower East Siden naapurustoon, missä hän ajautui rikollisille teille jo lapsuudessaan.[3][4] Hän ystävystyi teini-ikäisenä Meyer Lanskyn ja Bugsy Siegelin kanssa, joista tuli hänen uransa tärkeimmät liittolaiset. Vuonna 1916 hänet tuomittiin kuudeksi kuukaudeksi vankilaan heroiinikaupasta.[3] 1920-luvulla hän työskenteli Giuseppe ”Joe the Boss” Masserialle ja Arnold Rothsteinille.[5]

1930-luvun alussa, Joe Masserian ja Salvatore Maranzanon mafiasodan jälkeen, Luciano siirtyi johtamaan yhtä New Yorkin viidestä perheestä. Hän oli perustamassa amerikanitalialaisten rikollisperheiden välistä komissiota[6] sekä kansallista rikollissyndikaattia, joka mahdollisti yhteistyön esimerkiksi amerikanjuutalaisten ja -irlantilaisten rikollisjärjestöjen kanssa[7]. Mafiasta tuli järjestäytyneempi ja voimakkaampi.[3][5]

Vuonna 1936 Luciano tuomittiin 30–50 vuodeksi vankilaan, mistä käsin hän edelleen osallistui mafian toimintaan ja antoi käskyjä.[8][4] FBI kuitenkin vapautti Lucianon vankilasta 1943, jotta tämä käyttäisi suhteitaan Sisiliassa vastarinnan luomiseen saksalaisia vastaan liittoutuneiden suunnitellessa maihinnousua. Tämä onnistuikin, mutta hintana oli mafian vaikutusvallan kasvu koko Italiassa sodan jälkeen. Mussolinin fasistinen poliisi oli poikkeuslakien nojalla onnistunut melkein tuhoamaan ensimmäistä kertaa Italian historian aikana koko mafian.

Sodan päätyttyä Luciano karkotettiin kotimaahansa Italiaan vuonna 1946. Hänellä oli yhä valtaa amerikkalaisessa rikollissyndikaatissa, ja hän matkusti Havannaan Kuubaan Lanskyn järjestämään mafiakokoukseen. Yhdysvaltain hallituksen painostuksesta myös Kuuba pian karkotti Lucianon. Italiassa hän hyötyi edelleen mafiasuhteistaan, mutta hänen valtansa heikkeni vuosien kuluessa.[2] Hän kuoli sydänkohtaukseen Napolin lentokentällä 1962.[1]
