Iso katekismus (saks. Der Große Katechismus, alun perin saks. Deutsch catechismus[1]) on saksalaisen teologin Martin Lutherin huhtikuussa 1529 julkaistu katekismus. Sana ”katekismus” tarkoittaa lyhyttä esitystä kirkon opista. Keskiajalla katsottiin, että kansalle piti opettaa kristinuskon keskeinen sisältö. Tämä kirja osoitettiin erityisesti pappeille, joita se auttoi opettamaan seurakuntiaan.[2] Lutherin Iso katekismus on jaettu viiteen osaan: Kymmenen käskyä , uskontunnustus , Isä meidän- rukous , pyhä kaste ja ehtoollisen sakramentti.[3] Katekismukset ja siihen liittyvät asiakirjat julkaistiin osana Tunnustuskirjoja vuonna 1580.[1]

Iso katekismus kuvaa sitä painotusta, jolla Augsburgin tunnustuksen kirkot korostivat kristillisen uskon artikkeleiden tuntemisen ja ymmärtämisen tärkeydestä. Kirjoittaja esimerkiksi määrittelee esipuheessa:

Siksipä on jokaisen perheenisänkin velvollisuus on ainakin kerran viikossa lapsiltaan ja palvelusväeltään järjestään kysellen kuullustella ja selvittää, mitä he tietävät tai ovat oppineet, ja jos he eivät tiedä, vakaasti pakottaa heitä oppimaan.[3]

Yksimielisyyden ohje luonnehtii Lutherin katekismukset "maallikkoraamatuiksi, joissa esitetään lyhyesti kaikki se, mitä Raamattu käsittelee laveammin ja minkä tunteminen on kristityille välttämätöntä iankaikkiseksi autuudeksi.[1]
