HMCS Ottawa (viirinumero H31) oli Kanadan laivaston River-luokan hävittäjä, joka palveli toisessa maailmansodassa.

Valmistus

Alus tilattiin maaliskuussa 1934 Vickers Armstrongilta Newcastlesta osana vuoden 1933 laivasto-ohjelmaa Britannian Kuninkaalliselle laivastolle nimellä HMS Griffin. Sen valmistuskustannukset olivat 248 528 puntaa ilman Amiraliteetin toimittamia ase- ja viestijärjestelmiä.[1]

Griffin siirrettiin 1. maaliskuuta 1943 Kanadan laivastolle korvaamaan tuhoutunut HMCS Ottawa. Alus palasi 20. maaliskuuta palvelukseen nimellä HMCS Griffin, mutta sen muutostyöt valmistuivat kuitenkin vasta 24. maaliskuuta. Se nimettiin 10. huhtikuuta HMCS Ottawaksi.

Palvelus

Ottawa liitettiin huhtikuussa 1943 Keskisen Atlantin saattajiin (engl. Mid-Ocean Escort Force), jossa sen tehtävänä oli suojata saattueita Newfoundlandin St. Johnsin ja Irlannin Derryn välillä. Alus siirrettiin 25. huhtikuuta 1944 Kanadan laivaston aluksista koottuun sukellusveneiden metsästykseen keskittyvään osastoon.

Ottawa määrättiin toukokuussa 11. saattajaryhmän komentoalukseksi. Ryhmän muut alukset olivat HMCS Kootenay, HMCS Chaudière, HMCS Gatineau ja HMCS St. Laurent. Ryhmä osallistui Ottawan johdolla operaatio Neptunukseen eli Normandian maihinnousuun sukellusveneidentorjuntaosastona 25 mailia Plymouthista itään. Alus irroitettiin Beachy Headiin yhdessä Kootenayn kanssa saattueesta tukemaan HMS Staticea, joka oli saanut havainnon sukellusveneestä. Ottawa sai kaikuluotaimella havainnon sukellusveneestä, minkä jälkeen se aloitti hyökkäyksen. Hieman myöhemmin pintaan nousi öljyä sekä tavaraa, jonka joukossa U-678 merkitty lakki. Alus upotti 16. elokuuta Chaudieren kanssa sukellusvene U-621:n La Rochellen edustalla ja kaksi päivää myöhemmin Brestin länsipuolella U-984:n.[2]

Ottawan palattua Kanadaan se oli huollettavana 12. lokakuuta 1944 - 26. helmikuuta 1945 St. John'sin telakalla. Aluksen ollessa miinanraivaustehtävässä Halifaxin edustalla se kolaroi 11. maaliskuuta korvetti HMCS Stratfordin kanssa. Kummankin aluksen keula kärsi merkittäviä vaurioita. Aluksen korjaustyöt saatiin päätökseen vasta 30. huhtikuuta, minkä jälkeen alus teki muutaman joukkojenkuljetusmatkan St. John'sin, Halifaxin ja Greenockin välillä. Alus poistettiin palveluksesta 31. lokakuuta 1945 Sydneyssä ja se myytiin elokuussa 1946 International Iron and Metal Companylle romutettavaksi.[2]
