César Guerra-Peixe

César Guerra-Peixe (18. maaliskuuta 1914 Petrópolis – 26. marraskuuta 1993 Rio de Janeiro) oli brasilialainen säveltäjä, viulisti, kapellimestari ja musiikintutkija.[1]

Guerra-Peixe syntyi nuorimpana perheensä kymmenestä lapsesta. Hänen vanhempansa olivat romanisyntyperää olleita portugalilaisia maahanmuuttajia. Hänen isänsä teki hevosenkenkiä ja toimi lisäksi amatöörimuusikkona. Guerra-Peixe aloitti kitaransoiton 6-vuotiaana ja omaksui pian myös mandoliinin, viulun sekä pianon. Hän opiskeli musiikin teoriaa ja solmisaatiota 9-vuotiaasta. 11-vuotiaana hän pääsi oppilaaksi Petrópolisin Escola de Música Santa Cecíliaan. Guerra-Peixe saattoi teoriaopintonsa päätökseen vuonna 1929 ja alkoi laatia sovituksia soitinkokoonpanoille. Vuonna 1930 hän aloitti työskentelyn viulunsoiton opettajana. Guerra-Peixe asettui Rio de Janeiroon vuonna 1934. Vuonna 1939 hän perusti muiden säveltäjien kanssa Música Viva -kokoonpanon, joka omistautui aikansa eurooppalaisten teosten esittämiseen ja edistämiseen. Vuonna 1944 Guerra-Peixe aloitti opiskelun Paul Hindemithin oppilaan, säveltäjä Hans-Joachim Koellreutterin johdolla. Näiden opintojen jälkeen Guerra-Peixe hylkäsi kansalliset tyylivaikutteet ja aloitti sarjallisen säveltämisen. Myöhemmin hän kuitenkin hakeutui jälleen brasilialaisen kansanmusiikin pariin inspiraation lähteitä varten.[1]

Guerra-Peixe sävelsi muun muassa orkesteriteoksia, kamarimusiikkia, kosketinsoitinmusiikkia, yksinlauluja ja kuoroteoksia. Hän sävelsi myös musiikin moniin elokuviin. Lisäksi hän tuotti radiolähetyksiä ja dokumentteja, joihin hän myös itse sävelsi musiikkia. Guerra-Peixe kantaesitti usein omia teoksiaan viulistina tai kapellimestarina. Hänen kirjansa Os Maracatus do Recife on merkittävä etnomusikologinen julkaisu. Guerra-Peixe pysyi aktiivisena elämänsä loppuun saakka ja oli huomattava nuorempien säveltäjien mentori.[1]
