Charlotte Augusta

Charlotte Augusta (7. tammikuuta 1796 – 6. marraskuuta 1817) oli Yhdistyneen kuningaskunnan prinsessa. Hänen vanhempansa olivat Walesin prinssi, tuleva kuningas Yrjö IV ja Caroline von Braunschweig.

Charlotte sai tavata äitiään vain rajoitetusti, ja kasvoi lastenhoitajien ja kotiopettajattarien huomassa. Hänellä oli lämmin suhde isoisäänsä Yrjö III:een.[1] Charlotte kihlattiin joulukuussa 1813 Alankomaiden kruununprinssin Vilhelmin kanssa, mutta hän purki kihlauksen, koska ei halunnut muuttaa Alankomaihin.[2] Charlotte meni naimisiin Saksi-Coburgin prinssin Leopoldin kanssa toukokuussa 1816, mutta kuoli vain 18 kuukautta myöhemmin synnyttäessään ensimmäistä lastaan.[1]

Prinssihallitsija Yrjön ainoana lapsena Charlotte oli kruununperimyksessä seuraavana isänsä jälkeen.[3] Charlotte oli kansan suosiossa, toisin kuin pröystäilevään elämään taipuvainen isänsä, ja häntä kutsuttiin ”kansakunnan toivoksi ja ylpeydeksi”. Kun hän menehtyi viisikymmentä tuntia kestäneeseen synnytykseen, britit ilmaisivat suruaan monin tavoin.[4] Synnytyslääkäri Sir Richard Croft teki itsemurhan.[2]
