Butte [bjuːt] on kaupunki Yhdysvaltojen Montanan osavaltion lounaisosassa. Se on Silver Bow’n piirikunnan hallintokaupunki. Butte on vanha kulta-, hopea- ja kuparikaivoskaupunki, jossa 1900-luvun alussa asui kolmisen tuhatta suomalaissiirtolaista. Tuolloin asukkaita oli kaikkiaan noin sata tuhatta, kun vuoden 2010 väestönlaskennassa Buttessa oli enää 34 200 asukasta. Se on silti yhä Montanan osavaltion viidenneksi suurin kaupunki. Seudun kaivokset työllistävät enää noin 300 henkeä, ja suomalaisten jälkeläisiä on kaupungissa ehkä pari sataa.[1]

Historiaa

Butte perustettiin 1860-luvulla. 1900-luvun alussa kaivoksissa työskentelevien keski-ikä oli 35 vuotta. Syvimmillään työtä tehtiin noin 1 600 metriä maanpinnan alla. Kesällä 1917 Speculator-kaivoksen räjähdyksessä ja siitä alkaneessa tulipalossa kuoli 168 ihmistä, myös monia suomalaisia.[1]

Suomalaisten asuttama kaupunginosa tunnettiin nimellä Finntown. Siellä oli suomalaisten pitämä majatalo, kapakoita, luterilainen kirkko ja rouva Riipin 600-paikkainen ruokala. Viimeinen suomalaisista muistuttanut liike, Helsinki-baari, suljettiin 2010-luvun loppupuolella.[1] Buttessa oli syntynyt muun muassa Suomessa uransa tehnyt juristi ja hallintoneuvos Artturi Ikkala[2].

Hiski Salomaa laulaa laulussaan ”Lännen lokari” käyneensä myös Buttessa: ”Olen käynynnä Biuttissa, Lousissa, Retulaatsissa, Miiamissa...” Amerikansuomalaisten ”Retulaatsi” on toinen Montanan kaivoskaupunki, Red Lodge, ”Lousi” on tiettävästi Saint Louis, Missouri, ja ”Miiami” Floridan Miami.[3]
