Bit-slice

Bit-slice-prosessori (BSP) on suoritin, joka yhdistää pienemmän sanaleveyden suorittimia muodostamaan suuremman sanaleveyden suorittimen.[1] Yksinkertaisia aritmeettis-loogisen yksikön sisältäviä kaskadi-suorittimia kuten 4-bittistä voi yhdistää muodostamaan 8-, 16- tai 32-bittisen suorittimen.[2][1] Bit-slice -prosessoreita esiteltiin 1970-luvulla.[2][1][3] Menetelmää käytettiin kun ei vielä ollut mahdollista mahduttaa suurempaa suoritinta yhdelle piirille: bit-slice -prosessoria käytetään osana suorittimen rakentamiseen.[1] Bit-slice sijoittui välimaastoon kokonaisen mikroprosessorin ja TTL-logiikalla rakentamisen välille.[1] Bit-slice-prosessoreita käytettiin minitietokoneissa ja useissa muissa järjestelmissä 1970- ja 1980-luvulla, mutta tekniikka vanhentui kun CMOS-tekniikan kehittyminen mahdollisti nopean suorittimen valmistamisen yhdelle mikropiirille.[1] Eräitä bit-slice-prosessoreita ovat AMD Am2901, 74181 ja MMI 5701 sekä MMI 6701.[1][4][5][6][7]
