Tongera[1] (Chitonga) bantu hizkuntza bat da. Tonga herriak (Bantu Batonga) hitz egiten du, batez ere Zambiako hegoaldeko probintzian, Lusaka probintzian, Erdialdeko eta Mendebaldeko probintzian eta Zimbabweko iparraldean bizi direnak, eta gutxi batzuk ipar-mendebaldeko Mozambiken. Iwe, toka eta leya etniako kideek ere hitz egiten dute, baita zambiar eta zimbabwetar elebidun askok ere. Zambian tongera lehen hizkuntza bezala irakasten da Hegoaldeko Probintzia osoan, Lusaka eta Erdialdeko Probintzietan.

Zambiako lingua franca nagusienetako bat da, bemba, lozi eta txewerarekin batera. Tongerazko bi dialekto bereizgarri daude: haraneko tongera eta ordokiko tongera. Haranekoa Zambezi ibaiko haranean eta Batongako hegoaldeko eremuetan hitz egiten dute batez ere, eta ordokikoa, berriz, Monzeko barrutiaren eta Batongako iparraldeko eremuen inguruan hitz egiten dute gehien.[2]
