Thermococcus arkeoen genero bat da, Thermococcaceae familiakoa. Hipertermofiloa da, 75-100 º C-en artean bizi baita, itsas ondoko iturri hidrotermaletan. Anaerobio hertsia da.

Itxura esferikoa du, kimiorganotrofoa da eta sufrea erabiltzen du elektroien azken hartzaile gisa [1]. Genero honetako espezie gehienak mugikorrak dira, eta flagelo polarrak dituzte.

Thermococcus gammatolerans-ek erresistentzia handia dio gamma erradiazio ionizatzaileari [2].

Thermococcus-ek gluzidoak eta proteinak oxidatzen ditu energia lortzeko, sufrea izanik elektroien azken hartzailea; ondorioz, SH2 sortzen du, arrautza ustelaren usaina duen gasa.
