La mano del muerto.

La mano del muerto es una jugada del juego de naipes conocido como póquer. Se trata de una doble pareja de ases y ochos, y tradicionalmente es considerada una jugada que da mala suerte.

Origen

Era norma no escrita entre los jugadores profesionales de póquer de esa época sentarse de espaldas a la pared con un doble objetivo: salvaguardarse de posibles ataques por la espalda y evitar que un compinche de otro jugador le espiara la mano desde detrás. El 2 de agosto de 1876, en el saloon Nuttal & Mann's #10 de Deadwood, James Butler Hickock, más conocido como Wild Bill (‘el salvaje Bill’), no pudo aplicar esta regla elemental de seguridad, ya que el local contaba con dos puertas: una principal y una trasera. Wild Bill se sentó de cara a la puerta principal y se encontraba jugando cuando un delincuente conocido como Jack McCall se deslizó por la puerta trasera y le descerrajó un tiro en la nuca. Wild Bill cayó silenciosamente al suelo sin soltar las cartas que atenazaba en sus dedos: una doble pareja de ases y ochos, que se conocería desde entonces como «la mano del muerto».

Uso de la frase

La expresión "mano de hombre muerto" parece haber tenido cierta vigencia a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, aunque nadie la relacionó con Hickok hasta la década de 1920.[1]​[2]​ La primera referencia detallada fue en 1886, donde se describía como un "full formado por tres sotas y un par de dieces".[3]​ En la Encyclopaedia of Superstitions, Folklore, and the Occult Sciences (Enciclopedia de Supersticiones, Folclore y Ciencias Ocultas) de 1903, las jotas y los sietes reciben el nombre de mano del hombre muerto.[4]​ La edición de 1907 de Hoyle's Games (Juegos de Hoyle) se refiere a la mano como jotas y ochos.[5]​

Legado

La División de Homicidios del Departamento de Policía Metropolitana de Las Vegas, la brigada CRASH del Departamento de Policía de Los Ángeles y el Sistema Médico Forense de las Fuerzas Armadas utilizan alguna variante de la mano del muerto de ases y ochos en su insignia.[6]​[7]​ El Departamento de Policía de Deadwood la utiliza como parche en sus uniformes.[8]​
