Himba es el nombre de una etnia de nativos de la región árida de Kunene, en lo que en una época fue el bantustán de Kaokolandia (norte de Namibia) Los himbas son un pueblo seminómada, criadores de ganado, que están estrechamente ligados con los herero, con quienes comparten sus orígenes, así como el idioma otjiherero (los herero y los himba se separaron aproximadamente hace 200 años). Los himba son el único grupo de nativos de Namibia que aún conserva el original estilo de vida que tenía hace algunos siglos.

El jefe de cada tribu es además su líder espiritual. Se permite la poligamia; sin embargo, el máximo de tiempo que un hombre puede pasar con la misma esposa sin atender a otra es dos noches. El sistema de administración de justicia gira en torno a reuniones de los jefes de tribus para decidir el pago de la multa a imponer; todas las multas consisten en un pago en cabezas de ganado. El asesinato de un hombre conlleva un pago menor al del asesinato de una mujer.

Hasta relativamente hace poco tiempo, debido a las duras condiciones climáticas de la región, los himbas han logrado mantenerse relativamente aislados del exterior, y no han sido todavía muy influenciados por elementos culturales importados. Esto, sin embargo, está cambiando a causa del aumento en el flujo de turistas desde la independencia de Namibia en 1990. Los dulces, que los turistas regalan a los niños (causándoles caries), y el alcohol son elementos nuevos para los himbas; hombres que se han alcoholizado recientemente, han terminado por convertirse en pedigüeños (lo que era desconocido entre los himbas) para poder obtener de los turistas los recursos para seguir comprando alcohol.

Los himbas no llevan ropa, aparte de un básico taparrabos, pero usan gran cantidad de ornamentos al estilo de collares y brazaletes. Las mujeres se distinguen por los enrevesados estilos con que arreglan su cabellera. Adicionalmente, con el objeto de protegerse del intenso sol, las mujeres untan su cuerpo con una sustancia hecha mezclando ocre, manteca y hierbas, la cual les da a su piel un característico color rojizo.

A lo largo de los años los himbas han sido víctimas de diversas calamidades. Además de algunos periodos de intensa sequía, al principio del siglo XX estuvieron sujetos a intentos de exterminio genocida por el gobierno colonial alemán de Lothar von Trotha. Igualmente fueron gravemente afectados durante el conflicto bélico que enfrentó las fuerzas de SWAPO, Angola y Cuba contra las de Sudáfrica entre 1966 y 1988. Una amenaza más reciente es la controvertida propuesta de una presa en Epupa, que se teme afectará al ecosistema de la región de Kunene y a los himbas.
