Doble verdad

La doble verdad es una corriente que considera a los razonamientos y revelaciones (frutos, los unos de la razón y los otros de la fe o de los mitos paganos) como verdaderos a ambos, aunque puedan ser contradictorios. De manera que en esa corriente de pensamiento se plantea que existe una verdad doble.

Atribuida comúnmente al filósofo cordobés Averroes (1126-1198) este en realidad nunca defendió esa teoría, ya que consideraba que la verdad era una, a la que se podía llegar por varios caminos o vías.[1]​

Santo Tomás de Aquino (1225-1274) también se opuso; para él la fe es una gracia divina que Dios da a los hombres que elige y la razón también proviene de Dios, pero como facultad más distribuida que la fe (todos los hombres tienen razón, pero no todos tienen fe). Santo Tomás dice: "Filosofía y teología son dos disciplinas distintas pero no contrapuestas, confluyen en los preámbulos de fe y ambas se complementan y se prestan mutua ayuda (la razón con sus armas dialécticas, la fe como el criterio extrínseco) en la búsqueda de la verdad.

Guillermo de Ockham (1298-1349), vuelve a poner una distancia aún mayor entre la veracidad de la razón y de la fe (véase: navaja de Occam).
