ISBN estas internacia normigita numero de libro (angle International Standard Book Number, signife Internacia Standarda Libronumero). En Esperanto oni uzas, konservante la literojn ISBN: Internacia Sistema Bibliografia Numero.

Ĝin difinas la normo ISO 2108. ISBN unusignife identigas neperiodan publikaĵon: libron aŭ alian similan komunikilon. Por gazetoj kaj aliaj periodaĵoj validas ISSN.

Konsisto

ISBN konsistas el la vorto ISBN sekvata de kvar-parta numero kun disigaj streketoj. La numero longas 10 signojn antaŭ 1997 (ISBN-10), kaj 13 signojn ekde 2007 (ISBN-13), sen enkalkulante la streketojn. Se la kvar partoj sume malpli longas ol 10 aŭ respektive 13 signoj, oni ŝtopas la trian parton per nuloj.

  • la unua parto signas lingvan-landan areon, ekzemple 1 por anglalingvaj landoj, 7 por Ĉinio, 9954 por Maroko
  • la dua parto signas la eldonejon kun mallongaj kodoj por grandaj eldonejoj, kaj pli longaj kodoj por malgrandaj
  • la tria parto estas orda numero de la libro mem ĉe la eldonisto
  • la kvara parto estas kontrol-kodo kalkulita laŭ la antaŭaj partoj.

En la nova ISBN-13, la GS1-prefikso estas 978 kaj fariĝos 979, kiam la nunaj ISBN-oj elĉerpighos.

Kontrolcifero en la malnova sistemo ISBN-10

La lasta cifero dekstre estas kontrolcifero, kiu estas kalkulita per modulo 11 kun pezoj maldekstre-dekstren de 10 ĝis 2, uzante X anstataŭ 10 (kaj 0 anstataŭ 11). Tio signifas ke oni multiplikas la 9 unuajn ciferojn de la ISBN, per sekvenco de 10 ĝis 2 kaj ke oni dividas la sumon per 11. La reston de la divido oni subtrahas de 11 kaj jen la kontrolcifero.

Ni prenu kiel ekzemplon la ISBN 0-415-28807-? de la libro de Robert Phillipson "Ĉu nur-angla Eŭropo?" redaktita en la angla.

Kontrolcifero en la nova sistemo ISBN-13

La lasta cifero dekstre estas kontrolcifero, kiu estas kalkulita per multipliko de la 12 ciferoj de la ISBN, maldekstre-dekstren per alternative 1 kaj 3. Poste oni dividas la rezulton per 10 (modulo 10) kaj subtrahas la reston el 10 por obteni la kontrolciferon. Se la resto de la divido estas 10, oni anstataŭas ĝin per 0. Ekzemple, la kontrocifero (ISBN-13) de la sama libro, 978-9209-17084-? kalkuliĝas ĉi-tiele:

s = 9×1 + 7×3 + 8×1 + 9×3 + 2×1 + 0×3 + 9×1 + 1×3 + 7×1 + 0×3 + 8×1 + 4×3 

 =   9 +  21 +   8 +   27 +   2 +   0 +   9 +  3 +   7 +  0 +   8 +  12
