Cistercianoj estas anoj de romkatolika monaĥa ordeno, kiun fondis en la jaro 1098 en Cistercio (france:Cîteaux) grupo de Benediktanoj sub gvido de Robert de Molesmes.

La religia komunumo dediĉis sin al la celo, vivi strikte laŭ la reguloj, kiujn starigis Benedikto de Nursia en 540. Sekve ili volis vivi nur per "laboro de la propraj manoj". Enspezojn el interezoj kaj pruntedonoj ili ne akceptis.

Cisterciana arĥitekturo

La Cisterciana ordeno estis ekestinta per reformoj el la ordeno de la Benediktanoj. Por la instalado de la monaĥejoj ĝi preferis male al aliaj ordenoj forajn valojn. En la arĥitekturo ĝi komence obeis tre rigidan ordenregularon. La konstruaĵoj devis esti askete modesta kaj ne rajtis havi preĝejturojn, sed nur tegmentoturetojn, kiuj plejparte lokis sur la navokruciĝo. Ne ekzistis giganta okcidenta alkonstruaĵo. Komence la regularo preskribis rektajn fermitajn ĥorejojn kaj kapelojn, sed ekde proksimume 1150 oni konsideris la ĥorĉirkaŭirejon kun absidokapelaro kiel normon. Ankaŭ statuoj, koloraj vitraloj kaj aliaj luksaj ornamaĵoj estis malpermesitaj. Tiuj ĉi komence tre rigidaj tamen iom post iom malrigidiĝis.[1][2]
