Hi, you seem to be a knowledgeable person about Wiki stuff that relates to Vietnam. Do you know any good online archives that house high resolution public domain images of Vietnamese history and culture? Looking for 2MB minimum, ideally 10-20MB or more in uncompressed .tif format. Thinking of potential material for featured picture candidacy, would be glad to restore if the technical specs are up to par. I have to "copy paste" because the article with the new name has already existed and redirected to the old one. Please show me how to delete the page then i'll move the article to it.
I think the article is still at its early age. So, be flexible to what we do. Apparently, there is a sockpuppet that goes by the various names of Admitaside342 on Wikimedia Commons and Showwould40q on Wikipedia. In both places, Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons, Admitaside342 and his sockpuppet Showwould40q is arguing that there is an undefined copyright violation. Showwould40q attempted to begin a 3RR fight that I refused to participate in--even though he had already wrote me for the 3RR after merely placing the picture back in the article ONE. Both Admitaside342 and Showwould40q have ONLY edited three things in both of their entire editing careers with Wiki--Joseph Cao and Joseph Cao's picture. They both started their wiki careers in the last couple of days and they both seem to know how to complain to the Admin Notice Board and to have pictures taken down--specifically the Joseph Cao portrait that was specifically released by the Congressman's office. A Wikipedia admin has stated that he believes Showwould40q is a sockpuppet. I quote, "S's edit history is suspiciously short, presumably someone's sock." William M. Connolley (talk) 19:47, 2 February 2009 (UTC)No Violation Decision. As to the substance of the claim, the picture has been specifically released by the Congressman's office. There is paperwork on file with the Wikipedia Foundation to refute the sockpuppet's claim. I just wish that the sockpuppet would come forward and explain who he is.--InaMaka (talk) 02:22, 3 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
2009-02-02T19:47:00.000Z
William M. You claimed that you have permission from Cao's office for the image that you uploaded. You should provide proof of that to prevent it being considered a copyright violation. As I stated above I have an e-mail directly from Congressman Cao's office. When I posted the picture I forwarded a copy of the e-mail directly to the Wikipedia Foundation, as the posting instructions indicate. I still have that e-mail and the Wikipedia Foundation's response to my e-mail. How can I provide you with a copy of these various e-mails? I noticed that the original image on the Viet Wiki has been deleted, and I shamefully can't really read that much Vietnamese to be of much help. It looks like it was deleted on request of a non-member or something, and as the person who uploaded it to this side, and knowing more Vietnamese, maybe you're able to figure it out?
Also, somewhat unrelated, I was thinking of snapping some useful shots of the local Tet Festival tonight at Inala but ended up having camera problems. The usefulness of the camera's pretty dubious, since it's a bit old, but I'd take suggestions of something that may be considered useful, so I can try getting it tomorrow evening. I don't really know much about Tet and what's usually there, besides food, fireworks and lions, so I'd appreciate anything.

I couldn't find that image on Commons, actually. Maybe I didn't put in the right word or something? I never actually of Tet Festivals that way; I thought it was a regular thing, since I grew up going to them every year. I should probably consult my mum on that.
I was only really thinking of generic things that could be found in a Tet Festival anywhere, instead of more unique things. Thanks for the suggestions; I'll try to keep an eye open for clear shots of the bamboo pole, and the various displays of the flag. There are already good pictures of those three foods, but I can probably get shots of something like nem nuong, bo la lot, nuoc mia and the juicing machine for it. - Zero1328Talk?22:37, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
["c-Zero1328-2009-02-06T23:22:00.000Z-Zero1328-2009-02-06T22:37:00.000Z"]}}-->
Well, if it's really in the public domain like you say it is, it's probably just better off at Commons and having it copied from there, instead. And I've never seen a reconstructed Vietnamese village before! That sounds really weird for me. There's a large Vietnamese/Chinese community here and I've honestly thought Tet Festivals were a regular occurrence, instead of being something to introduce our culture. I don't really see anything done here in that regard. Anyway, if I do end up taking shots I'll be sure to let you know, since you can contribute to the Viet Wiki too. - Zero1328Talk?23:22, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->
Well, I just came home and reviewed my photos, and realised that I actually did fairly terrible. It was only on a whim but I ended up trying to prep for the second day, but I still had camera problems. I ended up taking photos at 1024x768 and my (quality) batteries kept dying after 10-15 shots, without flash or the active display. I also forgot about personality rights and forgot to make it very clear that I intended to publish the photos. Except for maybe the battery problem, it's been an interesting experience, taking photos in this type of environment, so I'll probably try to learn more about my camera when I find the next interesting photo op. Out of the 102 photos, I think only 5 or so are usable, but I won't place them on Commons, since I could do better next year. Nonetheless, I'm still grateful for your tips. - Zero1328Talk?14:11, 7 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->
Finally had a chance to do a lot of personal stuff, but only because I got ill and resting at home right now. Thanks for the suggestions again; I've been thinking that you might be doubting me or something, since I haven't shown anything, so I grabbed a sample and stuck it on megaupload: [1]
My hands have been shaky lately, for some reason, and most of these photos were taken from inside the car, whilst driving. We've mostly been going around the areas close to the house. I stuck them on megaupload instead of commons because I've only glanced at them so far and I want to be personally sure of the licensing and blurring of the sensitive things like faces, and I can probably only do that when this is all done. - Zero1328Talk?14:31, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->
I forgot to describe each photo; here's a quick summary in order of the photo numbers:
bamboo pole at Inala
nem nuong at Inala, mum said that it's red food colouring in the nem mix, not like that in vietnam
Entrance to Tet in INala, at night, the center banner in viet is actually all over the place in vietnam
A performance in Inala Tet, too blurry
This is taken over singapore
Something at a quality vietnamese restaurant
Interior of main saigon post office, has international help, money exchange, phones
power lines, it's like this everywhere
I think it's the emergency side to the hospital, I'll catch the name later
roundabout in front of a shopping center, billboards in center
one of many small streetpost signs
balut with side dishes, I cracked one open and placed it on the tray, this needs cropping
The ones with phone numbers are some sort of advertisement, I don't know what the center text says, I can't read it and didn't ask my mum
A quick file count says 244 photos in my camera so far, and I'll leave the settings as you see the vietnam photos as. I still need to further study my phone's abilities to take better photos. My sister also has a camera and I might use some of the ones she took, but I'd prefer to have her properly aware of the licensing available, which I also haven't properly studied. - Zero1328Talk?14:49, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->
After you and YellowMonkey download it I'll probably delete it just in case, next time I'm free, or after a few days, since this isn't really ready for presentation. I have fruit in the fridge and some dried lychee thing, a bit like raisins, which i might take photos of if I grab a plate to properly present it. I've taken alot of street photos, since I've been trying to find a photo of the explicit danger involved, particularly one with a turning group overtaking someone going straight, or someone crossing a road. It's all from the car though, so there should be a slight window reflection, and right now I can't tak photos at night due to light blurs, I need to work that out. - Zero1328Talk?15:01, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->
I think that was taken from the car, actually. I guess I'll try to take some new pics of it. But what do you think of the photo quality/usability? Those were the non blurry ones; I tried to take multiples for redundancy when I could, so generally, out of the several hundred photos I'll take, I guess half would be usable while a quarter would be informative enough for inclusion. - Zero1328Talk?02:44, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->

Regarding the photos you showed me, the one I had had a filling that was a very fine, soft-ish white paste made from sticky rice flour, filled with smashed mung beans, rather than whole sticky rice grains. Also, the inner leaf looked dark green and dull like the ones you showed me, but the outer leaf wrapping was very bright green, a banana leaf like in the above article's photo. It seems to be the same one I got here in Ohio. Perhaps makers in the U.S. are imitating the one you mention. There are other articles calling this bright green pyramid "banh it," such as this one. Southerners are shorter and darker (a stereotype some Northerners hold based on both climate differences and the idea that Southern Vietnamese, upon first settling in the southern regions, have mixed somewhat with the native Chams and Khmers)
I think there were a couple of other things that got lost in the shuffle as well.

I was going thorough an archives and came across an issue. I do not like how you handled it as feel your change did not address the issues I had raised and instead continued to introduce highly misleading claims in the article, that we not supported by the sources used. I have therefore modified the articles accordingly and further explained that here Talk:Cultural and political image of John McCain#Support for McCain vs support for him using the term 'gook'. Your comments are welcome. I understand given your background you may have your experience of the matter, but remember that we can only go by what the sources. The sources do not say that the majority of Vietnamese Americans were supportive of his use of the term gook, simply that they were generally supportive of McCain himself. This is quite a different thing and the two should not be conflated even if it is fine to mention both. As I've said, unless a poll was done on the specific issue, it seems unlikely anyone knows whether the majority of Vietnamese-Americans were supportive of his usage of the term. P.S. Just to be clear, I'm not saying that the majority of Vietnamese Americans were not supportive of McCain's usage of the term. I have no idea but would guess it's possible although would also guess a more subtle general opinion is possible e.g. are not necessarily offended by it but feel it would be best if he didn't use it even if they understand why he uses. Ultimately however, without reliable sources it's not something we should comment on (Nil Einne (talk) 21:30, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->

Has this fellow Major Lien Thanh, the former head of police in Hue come round to your area to speak about his new book "Bien Dong Mien Trung" about the Buddhist crisis in 1966, the Tet Offensive and Hue Massacre in 1968 and the 1972 communist offensive? I presume he went around the US before Australia. Apparently 1000+ people turned up in Melbourne. About 300 people here came out of maybe 12,000 Viets in the city, although only about 1% were under 45. He made some quite sensational claims about Thich Tri Quang etc [which violated BLP so I won't repeat it here], and all these people he claimed to be communists. The crowd, as far as I can tell, was more like an organised Diemist demonstration. Actually more like any Asian country where teh govt cadres tell the villagers to applaud at the end. There were a stack of people who all started clapping and cheering in a raucous way each time he bagged Thich Tri Quang, and their way of doing it didn't appear surprised as though they were taking new info, it seemed feigned. Most of them were well known Catholic activists lol. Actually, many Vietnamese-related articles are annotated with Chu Han in Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and other Wikipedias regardless of whether the same Chu Han annotations are used in Vietnam Wikipedia or not. Besides, for readers who from East Asian Cultural Sphere or who are familiar with Chu Han, it will be a good help for them to understand the original meaning of the certain terms if Chu Han annotations were used. Moreover, Chu Han is still used in some special cases in Vietnam, such as traditional ceremonies, history studies, traditional literature or Han Nom studies. By the way, I insist that people should not forget their own history and cultures.--서공·Tây Cống·セイコゥ? ★委ủy班ban復phục活hoạt漢hán喃nôm越việt南nam★ 13:54, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:20000pt.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Hello, I am an administrator of the Tagalog Wikipedia and can I ask for your help? I encountered an anonymous user who is attempting to create an article about Trường Sa but he/she is inserting it to the following pages: Kalayaan, Spratly Islands, and Palawan. The problem is, his/her contributions is incomprehensible probably created by Google Translate. This Vietnamese-language article does not have an English equivalent that is why I can't polish the translation. Can you help translate it to English so that I can also create a Tagalog translation? Hey, I've cleaned up the "In a nutshell" section in the diacritics discussion. When you get the chance, please indicate your support or opposition to each consensus point to allow us to determine which points have the most support. Hi, how are you doing? I would like to ask you for help. My account has been locked for a month by sysop Dung005. The reason he did that, according to him, is that I reverted his warning more than 3 times. And I actually did that. However, the reason I did that is because he, I strongly believe, issued an illigimate warning. I ll go into more detail. At first, we talked about the reason and the way he locked a new user who just made an edit for the first time in the article Nhan Quyen tai Vietnam. I argued with him about the ligitimacy and the process by which he did that. (You can read our discussion on the page Tin nhan cho bao quan vien in the section called Ve viec cam thanh vien Modesldale-and don't forget to look at the history page.) While discussing, he used insulting words to me, resulting in my deleting his insulting words (i used <s></s>). That's the reason he issued the first warning. I didn't accept that. And I reverted it. To conclude, please look for the way Sysop Dung005 locked the new user, and the way he issued various warnings to me. I believe that all of what he did is illegitimate and shows signs of abusing the sysop tools. While waiting for the expiry of the locking, I will be active in English. I use a permanent IP address, so i have no way to give any feedback on my Vietnamese page. Hi! I've been helping with the FAC for S&M (song) and found a source about what countries the song was banned in, but it's in Vietnamese... I did Google Translate, but just wanted to confirm that the machine translation was accurate. Based on the source would it be fair to say the following? "The video was banned in eleven countries, including China, Malaysia, and Indonesia." And for the source I intended to do: Tuấn Thảo (February 24, 2011). "Video clip của Rihanna bị 11 nước kiểm duyệt" (in Vietnamese). RFI Vietnamese. Retrieved July 24, 2011. (Machine translation via Google.) Thoughts? I'm a little bummed at your reversion of the infobox portraits of Vietnamese Americans. But since style is secondary to content, it's not too big a deal. Although, in order to be a more effective editor, I'm wondering if there were any guidelines that point to the use of HTML/CSS as something to avoid. The best I could find was WP:USE, which is neither a Wikipedia policy nor guideline, but rather a project goal, and their recommendation for HTML/CSS is to avoid its use (because it makes editing harder) unless it is absolutely necessary (as in to stylize things like notice boxes). yellowtailshark (talk) 07:27, 10 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->

Hi DHN, can you please move the article "Nan Yue" to Nam Viet? From my experience the name Nam Viet is a much more common name for the kingdom than the name "Nan Yue", so, changing the article's main title to "Nam Viet" would make this article more recognizable to fellow readers. The name "Nan Yue" also implies that this was a "Chinese" kingdom when it's not, as the Chinese (original Han, Mandarin-speaking) nation only spanned over current-day northern and central China at that time, what's now southern China had several indigenous kingdoms, including Nam Viet. As well, even though Nam Viet did have some ethnic Han Chinese immigrants living there and the kingdom was gradually "Sinocized" in culture, the people, the main language, and overall culture was still Yue/Viet. The western and southern Yue/Viet would (along with the Lac peoples) form today's Vietnamese people. Northern and eastern Yue/Viet will become assimilated and intermarry with Han Chinese to form today's Cantonese Han Chinese. Given that Nam Viet helped to give rise to an entire nation and people, the Vietnamese, rather than just form a small region of another (China), the article's main title should be changed to Nam Viet, given its cultural and historical importance to Vietnam. Just because Nam Viet was somewhat Sinocized throughout it's existance, not assimilated during its existence, it cannot be classified as a "Chinese" nation, as other countries in the Sinosphere (Vietnam, Korea) were also to a degree Sinocized themselves, yet with their independence, separate distinct culture, separate distinct language, separate distinct ethnicity, and separate distinct identity, they cannot be called a "Chinese" nation. Northern Vietnam and northern Korea, and Mongolia, were a part of the Chinese empire at some time in it's history, but they cannot be called a "Chinese" nation. As well, just because Han Chinese from the north immigrated to Nam Viet and settled there, just as how Han Chinese have immigrated to other nations like Vietnam, Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore (even forming the majority in Singapore), does it justify in calling all these countries "Chinese"? The name Nan Yue should stay, like in the first line in the first paragraph for example, but the main article's name and title should be changed to Nam Viet.

Hi DHN, there's a brewing editwar on this Truong Sa article, where a user named "Freedom of Navigation" is deleting sourced material and denying the US' apparently indirect and implicit involvement in the dispute there, implicitly siding with VN and the Philippines, and is accusing me of having a vested interest in this, when i don't. Hi DHN. Can you help improving the article Flag of Vietnam? Besides bad organization and lack of reliable references, an important issue is that a user insists on adding Chinese flags as "influences" of the Vietnamese flag. I tried to discuss with him but it seems to be fruitless. You can look at Hán Việt Từ Điển. Put in a Chinese character, and it gives you a transliteration into Vietnamese. The character dictionaries typically abbreviate Han-Viet as "Hv.", which is always followed by a transliteration. Here is one that's online. What the "synthesis"? That this system of transliteration is notable enough to write an article about? Or that it is called "Han-Viet"? Hi, okay thanks, I think then I mistook your completely understandable realism for opposition to Vietnamese and I apologise for doing so. I would agree there seems to be a double standard in this matter with regards to Eastern European names however there have recently been Eastern (and Western) European editors noting this point, and Japanese Chinese American and Australian too. I think if we re-ran the RfC now it would be 23:5 in favour of Vietnamese names not 23:16. Note that User:Colonies Chris has - with a series of 5 RMs - restored most of the undiscussed moved geo articles.
As regards inviting back and retaining Vietnamese editors, well that's a longer term problem. Wikipedia is losing editors all over the project, not just WP Vietnam. Hi DHN, could you please intervene on the South Vietnam article and page-protect the article? The user HCPUNXKID changed the status of VNCH in the article's infobox from "Sovereign republic" to "Client state of the United States" 3 times now, and reverted 4 edits on this. HCPUNXKID's edit is controversial and is disputed even in academic circles, and it is clearly POV. Sources he used includes one from the Peace Pledge Union (which clearly lacks a neutral POV and even got the date for the Fall of Saigon wrong), another from a poetry site (also lacking NPOV), and one from a bookstore review... In the past, there were edit wars over the U.S. client state status, at least 2 i can recall since 2010, and it was consistently rejected. Hi, user MiG29VN keeps on removing sources that links to WGBH (PBS Boston) and SBTN video interviews, which are credible references, simply because they were uploaded on Youtube. I would like to ask, can video interviews/documentaries produced by a credible source (like popular news outlets, eg those listed above), that are simply uploaded on Youtube or a popular video site, be used as references? MiGVN has also made the ridiculous declaration that "In wikipedia's law, and we agreed History.net and xxx.edu are the reliable sources". An online criminal can create a malware site, or any fake "educational" institution can create an .edu website, and those will still be considered "reliable sources"??

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Johnny Nguyen (footballer), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. You might as well go and add the same tag to the articles on Jack the Ripper or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. No one knows. This is in reference to a relatively new umbrella article on en-wikipedia named Ceremonial pole. Ceremonial pole is a human tradition since ancient times; either existed in past at some point of time, or still exists in some cultures across global continents from north to south & from east to west. Ceremonial poles are used to symbolize a variety of concepts in several different world cultures.
Through article Ceremonial pole we intend to take encyclopedic note of cultural aspects and festive celebrations around Ceremonial pole as an umbrella article and want to have historical, mythological, anthropological aspects, reverence or worships wherever concerned as a small part.
While Ceremonial poles have a long past and strong presence but usually less discussed subject. Even before we seek translation of this article in global languages, we need to have more encyclopedic information/input about Ceremonial poles from all global cultures and languages. And we seek your assistance in the same.
Since other contributors to the article are insisting for reliable sources and Standard native english; If your contributions get deleted (for some reason like linguistics or may be your information is reliable but unfortunately dosent match expectations of other editors) , please do list the same on Talk:Ceremonial pole page so that other wikipedians may help improve by interlanguage collaborations, and/or some other language wikipedias may be interested in giving more importance to reliablity of information over other factors on their respective wikipedia.
Thanking you with warm regards

16 years, 13,000 edits, a clearly worded request at the top of my page (that is fairly standard practice across the project), plus you claim to be a bureaucrat and an admin on vi.WP, with whatever numbers of years and edits there, so... really? I found you from the list of translators, so I hope you can help me. I am working on Draft:Longan witches broom-associated virus and I have used google translate to get me most of the way, but it seems that the Vietnamese terms for the disease do not use the word 'witch'. The terms I found are chổi rồng trên nhãn,[1]chổi rồng hại nhãn, bệnh chùn ngọn, bệnh chổi sể, and bệnh hủi nhãn.[2] Google lends me to believe that these terms refer to dragons and not witches, which seems plausible given the idiom 'witches broom' doesn't necessarily mean anything in Vietnam. I am hoping you can provide a good literal translation, and hopefully I can use it as a DYK hook for halloween or something. Let me know if I'm close or not. On 3 June 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Ho Chi Minh Monument, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that a monument in Moscow honoring North Vietnamese communist leader Ho Chi Minh has been nicknamed the "flying saucer monument" by locals? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Ho Chi Minh Monument), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hello DHK
You reverted with reason Gin people do not speak Vietnamese.
Why in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-hEWdMh5G0
Gin people can talk with the Vietnamese interviewer from VTV. A Gin kid can sing a Vietnamese traditional song?
As you said, that's mean Vietnamese interviewer speak Cantonese?
You base the source from the book of non-Vietnamese author, are you sure that author understand Vietnamese??
And you said that Vietnamese not written in chu Nom. Do you know thu phap??
And you said chu Nom is Chinese-derived? That's mean chu Nom is Chinese language??
(Sorry for my bad English)
07 September 2020
@Cocacolakogas: The news segment is sensationalistic since they want to promote the language. Even the name of the segment is sensationalistic ("Days of returning to our beloved roots"). If you notice, the people speaking Vietnamese are old. The Vietnamese teachers are actually trained in Vietnam, and as you see in the classroom they actually teach quốc ngữ and not chu Nom. If you read the Chinese characters on the whiteboard, they're actually Chinese and not chu Nom. For example, màu đỏ (red) and màu vàng (yellow) have the corresponding characters 红色 (hồng sắc) and 黄色 (hoàng sắc), which are decidedly not Vietnamese. This revisionist history you pointed out at the "Kingdom of Vietnam" article isn't an isolated incident, it is systemic and has been going on for quite some time. Unfortunately nobody has actually stood up to it except for "Vif12vf" in that one edit. But this user really doesn't seem to like the mainstream historiography, please see my comments in the AfD for more details. It really isn't an isolated case. --Donald Trung (talk) 19:36, 12 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->
Not sure if you have the time, but could you take a look at "Talk:Đại Việt" and its corresponding article? Is this something that has now become commonplace in Vietnamese historiography to group all pre-Nguyễn periods together as the "Kingdom of Đại-Việt"?
BTW, maybe you should set up an archive for your talk page as it's really long. --Donald Trung (talk) 12:21, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
["c-DHN-2021-09-08T01:36:00.000Z-Donald_Trung-2021-09-07T12:21:00.000Z"]}}-->

I usually work in French->English translation and keep encountering a series of articles about the Franco-Prussian War whose only other versions are in Vietnamese. Somebody
ran them through Google Translate and the results are of course uneven. I am working with that editor since he is apparently interested in the topic, but wondered if you might be interested/available to clarify some of the more mysterious passages? If your interest is limited I could make the questions really specific, as I suspect the problem in places is a word-for-word translation of a sentence that *does* parse in Vietnamese. They’ve been machine translated from Vietnamese. I understand the issue, as these are an example of why. I myself spend a lot of time cleaning up machine-translation from French to English. However, they do represent information about given battles that is not elsewhere in Wikipedia, and while I don’t see an urgent need to expand our coverage of the Franco-Prussian War — the fr and de Wikipedias haven’t done so — it *was* however the reason for the abolition of the Bourbon Empire, and the Third Republic, so if we can get the articles to a certain standard, I am in favor of keeping them. Let me know how you would like to proceed. If certain problems are also in the original, that would tell us something. If names have been translated, you can let us know. Ideally you would proofread them against the originals, but that may be more than you are willing to do. But while there are several, each of them is fairly short, and since their importance is mainly to 19th century European history, as far as I am concerned at least, there is no urgency and this could be a long-term side project, pro bono, as it were. WP:PNT pages don’t usually get deleted once we list them, unless we do it ourselves. On the other hand, if your interest is limited, I could ask you specific questions when I get stuck. So far I have been identifying and wikilinking names of people, places and military units. I do speak French very well, and can read German a little, took it in school. Let me know. If you want to look at one, am currently working on Battle of Buchy and have linked some of the references, which look quite good. Battle of Gray is much worse, but I have brought it to the attention of the original translator, and it seems only fair that he improve it as much as he can before somebody else goes to heroic measures over it. If you like, I can tag you on others as I encounter them. He said he did these for the redlinks in the nav box for the war. @Elinruby: I have limited interest in this topic but feel free to ask me any specific question regarding translation. 1) could the place name “Zalmay” become “Talmay” in Vietnamese somehow? I am trying to determine if this is the same village, and the change doesn’t seem like something that came from French. Neither one has a wiki page, as best I can tell.
2) In the Vietnamese text “Trong cuộc giao chiến ở Essertenne và Talmay gần Gray, lữ đoàn của Hoàng thân Wilhelm xứ Baden thuộc Quân đoàn số 14 thuộc quân đội Đức - Phổ dưới quyền chỉ huy của tướng Karl August Werder của Phổ đã nhanh chóng đánh bại một lực lượng Garde Mobile được phái đến phòng ngự suối Vingeanne thuộc Binh đoàn Côte d'Or của quân đội Pháp dưới sự chỉ huy của Đại tá Laval, buộc đạo quân Pháp này phải rút chạy tiến hành khỏi Gray” google is doing something ambiguous with the relationship between the Garde mobile and the Côte d’Or army, can you clarify perhaps? Côte d’Or is the region where the battle took place, so I think that army is a local regiment, but it isn’t clear what they are doing in that sentence. The Garde mobile was holding a line on the banks of the Vingeanne, right?

@Elinruby: This passage seems to be partly sourced from here (p. 483), so 1) Talmay seems to be the correct name; and 2) you can see the relationship between the Garde mobile and the Côte d’Or army described in the book (the Garde mobile was designated the Armée de la Côte d’Or). I noticed that you removed the paragraph. You may think it's irrelevant. Actually, The book Women Film Directors: An International Bio-critical Dictionary mentions that the movie was banned, and probably unbanned in 2008 (with a DVD importation from Hong Kong). That's why I added that release content. Though, I don't intend to restore the revising, just to remind that the film used to be banned in China.--Beta Lohman※Office box06:44, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
["c-DHN-20220927072000-Beta_Lohman-20220927064400","c-Beta_Lohman-20220927075500-Beta_Lohman-20220927064400"]}}-->
@Beta Lohman The assertion that the film was "banned" in China seems illogical, since it was filmed in Hainan with the permission of the PRC government (who reviewed the script and requested that the director change some details). It might not have been screened in China but I don't see any logical reason why the PRC government would actively oppose it given its apparent subject matter. Hui was pretty optimistic that "it will be distributed in Mainland China as well as in the usual movie markets for Hong Kong films.". In fact, much of the controversies about the film is about whether it's PRC propaganda. Perhaps they confused the PRC with the ROC government, which did in fact ban it. In any case, I think a DVD release in 2008, more than 25 years after it was in theaters, is hardly worth mentioning. Thanks for response. I would like to respond to one more thing. For example, Summer Palace was not submitted to the State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT) for review in the beginning, and then participated in a French film festival, and is still banned in China. The Chinese government can ban a film for any reason, and political issues are illogical in the first place.
As for whether Boat People was banned in the 1980s or not. I don't intend to pursue this issue, because the book says it was banned, so it's a banned (and unbanned) movie.--Beta Lohman※Office box07:55, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
-->

Just dropping by to say that I just read the article about the Vietnamese language in the United States and that I loved it. I found the section about some Vietnamese Americans' distrust of or distaste for some words in the Vietnamese language for their communist connotation especially interesting. I am a white American, and Vietnamese American culture has always been a minor but intriguing influence in my life. But aside aside from having a few Vietnamese classmates growing up and eating at Vietnamese restaurants once in a while, I have never had much contact with that culture or language. Wow, it's been a while - time really flies. If you have time, I would like to discuss the inclusion of Vietnamese-language sourcing in the article, partially in consideration of a FAC run. I think I have been able to consider and incorporate most English-language material about the incident, but there are few Vietnamese-language references (both from US publications covering the event, often anti-Trường, and Vietnamese state media which seems to have taken him up as an "overseas patriot" through the years - based on the original article on viwiki that you created) currently used. Do you think this significantly impacts the article, or is the current use of sourcing enough? Thanks. @MSG17 Hi, thanks again for creating the English version of the article! I was mostly using the Vietnamese-language sources for the exact quotes (instead of back-translating from English-language sources). However, I didn't have much luck finding contemporary sources online - most Vietnamese-language sources I found were written years after the fact, and some of those sources published in Vietnam got some facts wrong to fit their narrative. I wouldn't use them as factual sources, but more of "reaction" sources. I think the inclusion of the BBC source is enough, or if you'd like you can add Vietnamese government views of the events years later but I don't consider it essential. There's a couple of contemporary RFA articles I found that you might want to consider incorporating, but again only for the "reactions" section. DHN (talk) 23:42, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]__DTELLIPSISBUTTON__
["c-MSG17-20230823012100-DHN-20230822234200"]}}-->
Yeah, I was definitely thinking about reactions/perspectives. I had earlier hoped to include something about the Vietnamese government's perspective, but since I couldn't find a secondary source I am hesitant to cobble together the "primary sources" (state media) in what would seem to be original research (especially if they "modified the facts"). I also don't think the RFA sources give a lot of relevant info that isn't already in English sources (esp. Ha 2002). This article from Saigon Nhỏ seems interesting with regards to the developments with Trường and the community, but I don't know how reliable or well-known this publication is (I didn't link the first part as it seems to mostly be a summary of the event which I suspect was strongly influenced by the Wiki articles). @MSG17 Yeah, I found that article recently, and a lot of text from it (the description of the events) was taken verbatim from vi.wiki.
