Aseprite (formerly called Allegro Sprite Editor) is a raster graphics editor for Windows, macOS and Linux, created by David Capello.[1] It is specifically designed for creating and editing Sprites and pixel art animations. It has a 99% positive rating (out of 1,462 reviews) on Steam, has been recommended by artist Thomas Feichtmeir (@cyangmou) with a 6.5 / 10 rating, and was one of the six recommended programs in 2017 for pixel art on PC Gamer.[2]

Characteristics

Aseprite presents an interface that uses layers, frames and cells (intersections between layer and frame) similar to that of Adobe Flash.

The program has drawing tools common to other bitmap graphics editors such as the pencil, eraser and fill tool, and various selection tools. Besides, it has several features designed for pixel art, such as drawing with "pixel-perfect" lines, use of the rotsprite algorithm for image transformation, and editing indexed palettes.[3]

Aseprite also allows the creation of scripts in the Lua language to automate tasks for its users from version 1.2.10-beta2.[4] Another peculiarity of Aseprite is that its users can modify and compile its source code for their personal use.[1]

Supported file formats

  • ASE / ASEPRITE: Native file extension of aseprite. It uses lossless compression, and allows you to save layers, animations, 32-bit color, 8-bit transparencies, palettes and other settings.
  • BMP: Microsoft's BMP file format.
  • FLC / FLI: Native animation graphics formats from Autodesk Animator, from Autodesk, Inc.
  • GIF (Graphics Interchange Format): A graphic format with 8-bit color depth, which allows animations.
  • ICO: Extension used for files containing icons.
  • JPEG / JPG (Joint Photographic Experts Group): Lossy compression graphic format.
  • PCX (PiCture eXchange): graphic format with lossless compression, native to ZSoft's PC Paintbrush program.
  • PCC: graphic format with lossless compression, native to ZSoft's PC Paintbrush program.
  • PNG (Portable Network Graphics): Lossless compression graphic format with 8- and 16-bit color depth.
  • SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics): Open standard vector graphics format.
  • TGA (Truevision TGA): graphic format without compression (or with lossless compression).
  • WEBP: Containerized graphic format, derived from the VP8 video format. Allows lossy and lossless compression.
