Talk:Mary Poppins (book series)

I've just disassociated this Talk page from Talk:Mary Poppins (1964 film). Coyoty 02:15, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is the climax of the story?

Of the book or the film? If you're talking about the film, I'd probably say Mr. Bank's final confrontation with his employers when he finally learns the significance of the tuppence. 23skidoo 04:39, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted sections

I had a problem with the edit summary on my recent edit, so in case anyone is wondering why I deleted the "Songs" and "See also" sections, they don't belong in this article anymore as there is now an article about the movie Mary Poppins (film). The word Super...etc.etc.... was created for the movie and does not originate from the Travers books, so it should be linked from the film article only. 23skidoo 16:39, 3 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Less film, more Travers

I love the film, but as it already has its own article, I think the "Mary Poppins" article needs to be less oriented towards film specific details and more towards the Travers character and things that can be said for all versions of the character. -- Infrogmation 03:10, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's also the racism controversy, which seems to be completely ignored... AnonMoos 22:04, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
What racism controversy? Was it any more racist than other works of the time period? Not everyone has any idea what you're talking about -- please think about at least a brief writeup. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.210.250.10 (talk) 22:36, 15 January 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Dates

The date of the first attempt by Disney to buy the rights was listed as 1931 - before the first book was published. I've corrected this to 1938, as per the article on the Disney movie.KaminoNeko 18:37, 21 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Split Page

I think this page should be split so to clearly differentiate between the Mary Poppins character and the Mary Poppins books. If this is okay with everyone, I'll create a separate page and disambiguation page. -- Annie D 04:44, 23 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Soviet film "Goodbye Mary Poppins"

There was a USSR TV Movie made, called "Mary Poppins, Do Svidaniya", which is very famous here in Russia. It's New Year's Eve, and I've already heard a song from the film on the TV, sung by different people, twice (it's called, as I understand it, "the Winds of Change"). Maybe someone who knows about it could write something. It's on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085932/. It's covered in Russian wikipedia: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%9C%D1%8D%D1%80%D0%B8_%D0%9F%D0%BE%D0%BF%D0%BF%D0%B8%D0%BD%D1%81%2C_%D0%B4%D0%BE_%D1%81%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%B8%D1%8F%21_%28%D1%84%D0%B8%D0%BB%D1%8C%D0%BC%29

Added book descriptions

I've added brief descriptions for the last four books, using mostly Amazon for reference. 76.195.9.118 00:17, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. And I've added an infobox with an image. Feel free to upgrade to a better picture; my copies of the books are pretty rough (mostly ex-library). -- Karen | Talk | contribs 05:11, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mary Poppins beginnings

I've always wondered whether Mary Poppins perhaps was Bert's nanny many years ago (being a magical figure perhaps she doesn't age). Do the books hint at this, or do they only talk about her visits to #17 Cherry Tree Lane? Cputrdoc (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 19:52, 5 January 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Mary Poppins Books

The books listed at http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/t/p-l-travers/ don't match the list on this article. The dates differ and there are extra books. Does anyone know enough about the books to say what's right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Strange ideas (talkcontribs) 15:16, 24 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The only way I'd encountered the character prior to the Disney film was a pair of short, illustrated "Little Golden Books" for children, which my mom read to me when I was quite young (so, these must have been published no later than the mid-1950's). These editions, which seem to be based on incidents from the Travers books, should be documented. WHPratt (talk) 04:05, 14 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"pops in" and "pops out"

This sentence is confusing, and seems to be missing the point:

"Encounters with chimney sweeps, shopkeepers and various adventures follow until Mary Poppins abruptly leaves, i.e., "pops-out"."

It looks as if it's explaining the meaning of "leaves", when surely it should be the other way around -- i.e., explaining to non-BrE readers that "pops out" (note, no hyphen) means "leaves"? Anyway, isn't the whole point that she "pops in" (Poppins, geddit?), does some stuff and then "pops out" again. Unfortunately I don't know the stories well enough to try to fix this. 81.159.105.243 (talk) 03:46, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MISSING MOVIE?

My mom said there was a Mary Poppins movie called "chity chity bam bam" or something like that? Can you please check it out and let us know more about it please! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.247.161.230 (talk) 19:24, 29 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ian Fleming, the author of the James Bond novels, wrote the children's book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The success of Disney's Mary Poppins film encouraged the filming of the book. It starred Dick van Dyke, which is no doubt the source of your mother's grotesque confusion. WilliamSommerwerck (talk) 21:41, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It also features music from the Sherman brothers, so that might add to the confusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.4.124.209 (talk) 09:41, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

spoofs & parodies

There should be a section on Mary Poppins take-offs, such as the Simpsons episode introducing Sherry Bobbins, "an entirely new and original creation". WilliamSommerwerck (talk) 21:41, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some murk in story of stage productions

According to the article, P.L. Travers was unhappy about having Disney involved with a stage production and finally okayed a British production. Yet also according to the article, Disney did mount a stage production which ultimately ended on Broadway.

How did the Disney production come about? What is the relationship between the two productions?

I'm curious because last night I attended a stage production (don't ask) and it seemed to have all the trademarks of Disney and I didn't at the time have any reason to believe otherwise. However, it would be nice to know that there is a better production around. --174.7.56.10 (talk) 21:16, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is only one production, the stage rights were acquired by Cameron Mackintosh, but the music is heavily based on the score of the 1964 film adaptation, which of course is owned by Disney. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.6.5.18 (talk) 10:34, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Banks was represented well?

From the section on the character of Mr. Banks: "Though this is not the character specifically created in the books, he is represented well." According to whom? This statement sounds like an opinion. Is this the opinion of the Wiki contributor or is it from another source? If from a source, the source should be referenced. If not, the opinion of the faithfulness of the representation should not be part of this article unless it is commonly accepted. In which case that would still beg for a source reference, wouldn't it? MandieJ1975 (talk) 22:28, 28 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
