The museum depicts the evolution of Seoul from the prehistoric period to the current day. It also hosts special exhibitions.[1]
The museum runs the online service Seoul History Archives. The website provides digitized museum materials to the public, free of charge. It offers materials for both non-commercial and commercial use.[2][3]

The museum's building finished construction on 15 December 1993 in Gyeonghuigung Palace, although the museum did not open until 21 May 2002. It acquired the Chonggyecheon Museum on 1 January 2006.[5]
As of August 2021[update], the museum's director is Kim Yong-seok.[5]
