Proton Calendar is an online calendar service developed by the Swiss company Proton AG. It is available as a web application and as mobile applications for Android and iOS. The service is designed around privacy and uses end-to-end encryption to protect the contents of calendar events.[1][2]
Proton Calendar was first released as a public beta in December 2019. It was initially offered to users with paid Proton Mail subscriptions before becoming available to all Proton users in April 2021.[3][4]
History
Proton announced Proton Calendar in December 2019 as part of its expansion beyond encrypted email. The initial beta was presented as a privacy-focused calendar in which event information would be encrypted before being stored on Proton's servers.[4]
The service initially operated through the web. Proton later expanded Proton Calendar to mobile devices. The Android application entered beta before leaving beta in April 2022, while an iOS version became available later that year.[5][1]
In April 2021, Proton announced that Proton Calendar was available to all Proton users, including those on the free plan.[3]
During 2022, Proton expanded the service to iOS, making Proton Calendar available across web, Android and iOS platforms.[1]
Features
Proton Calendar provides standard calendar functions for creating, editing and organizing events. It supports multiple calendar views, recurring events and configurable reminders.[2]
The service integrates with Proton Mail. Users can manage calendar invitations from Proton Mail and add events received in email messages to their calendars.[2]
Proton Calendar also supports calendar sharing. Depending on the permissions selected, users can share availability or provide other users with access to calendar information.[2]
The service provides different calendar views and allows users to create recurring events on daily, weekly, monthly or customized schedules. Multiple reminders and email notifications can also be configured.[2]
Privacy and security
Privacy and encryption are central aspects of Proton Calendar. Proton states that the critical contents of calendar events—including titles, descriptions, locations and attendee information—are protected with end-to-end encryption.[6]
According to Proton's privacy policy, the company cannot decrypt encrypted calendar content. Some event properties remain accessible to Proton for technical purposes, including start and end times, time-zone information, repetition rules, creation and update times, and event status.[7]
Proton says that Proton Calendar uses elliptic-curve cryptography, including Curve25519, as part of its encryption architecture.[6]
Calendar events can be searched locally on a user's device. Proton states that search is performed after encrypted event data has been downloaded to the device, allowing the contents to be searched without sending the unencrypted event data to Proton's servers.[8]
Open source
Proton states that the Proton Calendar web application is open source and that its software has been independently audited. The company publishes technical information about the cryptographic design used by the service.[6]
Independent privacy-oriented organization Privacy Guides lists Proton Calendar among calendar services that use end-to-end encryption and notes security assessments associated with Proton's applications.[9]
Calendar sharing
Proton added support for direct sharing of calendars with other Proton users in April 2023. Shared calendars can be accessed through Proton's web and mobile applications, with different permission levels for viewing and editing.[10]
Proton states that calendars shared between Proton users remain protected by end-to-end encryption and that access is controlled by the calendar owner.[10]
Availability
Proton Calendar is available through the web and through dedicated applications for Android and iOS.[2]
The service is offered as part of Proton's broader ecosystem of privacy-oriented products, including Proton Mail, Proton Drive, Proton VPN and Proton Pass.[2]
Basic calendar functionality is available without a paid subscription, while additional features such as expanded calendar management and collaboration depend on the user's Proton plan.[1][2]
Reception
Coverage of Proton Calendar has generally focused on its privacy features and its integration with Proton's other products. In 2022, TechRadar described the service's expansion to iOS as a significant addition to Proton's privacy-focused product ecosystem.[1]
Privacy-focused organizations have also highlighted the service's use of end-to-end encryption as a distinction from conventional cloud calendar services.[9]
