On December 15, 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Slaughter to serve as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Central District of California.[3] President Biden nominated Slaughter to the seat vacated by Judge Andrew J. Guilford, who assumed senior status on July 5, 2019.[6] On January 12, 2022, a hearing on his nomination was held before the Senate Judiciary Committee.[7] On February 10, 2022, his nomination was reported out of committee by a 15–7 vote.[8] On March 16, 2022, the United States Senate invoked cloture on his nomination by a 56–41 vote.[9] On March 17, 2022, his nomination was confirmed by a 57–41 vote.[10] He received his judicial commission on April 19, 2022.[11]
