Proponents argue that technology can generate significant moral savings through thoughtful design and targeted application. Rather than replacing moral agency, proponents argue technology could offer extensive capabilities to reinforce it.

SinTech encompasses any technology whose primary purpose is to reduce, interrupt, or make legible behaviours that cause moral harm. This distinguishes it from general consumer wellness technology (which targets health outcomes) and from regulatory compliance tools (which target legal risk). The defining characteristic is its explicit engagement with an ethical or theological framework as the basis for its design logic.

Origins

The term was coined in 2025 by the founders of Fygge[1], a UK-based values-aligned investment platform built on a natural law and Christian moral framework. The intellectual lineage of SinTech is traceable to Islamic banking and finance - a $3.5 trillion global industry built on Shariah-compliant screening algorithms - as its most developed prior example.[2]

Finance

Islamic finance platforms use Shariah-screening algorithms to enforce prohibitions on interest, alcohol, tobacco, weapons, and gambling at portfolio scale. ESG investing operates on comparable structural logic, though typically without explicit theological grounding.

Nutrition

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and AI-driven meal planning platforms that model hormonal response and long-term disease risk. The design insight is that immediate biological feedback interrupts compulsive consumption more effectively than generalised public health messaging, a finding supported by personalised dietary research using CGM data.[3]

Pornography and the attention economy

Age verification technology (mandated in the UK under the Online Safety Act 2023),[4] accountability-based browsing tools, and frictionalised interface design intended to interrupt compulsive use loops.

SinTech's intellectual foundation is the argument that the built environment has always either supported or subverted the moral life. The field draws on, amongst other things, Alasdair MacIntyre's thesis that moral language requires a sustaining tradition to remain coherent, [6] the behavioural design insight that environments can be redesigned to support better choices,[7] and on the Islamic jurisprudential tradition of Maqasid.

Criticism

There is a degree of criticism and push back against the utility of such a term that broadly falls across four areas:

  • Algorithmic reductionism: virtue is character formation over time, not just behaviour modification. The application of behavioural technology can only go so far if the less emphasis has been placed upstream on character formation. An app cannot substitute from deeper questions of knowing yourself.
  • Theological pluralism: questions arise over whose moral grammar the algorithm encodes. A regular question is around the hierarchy of theological interpretations and which once is ascendant in any given approach. Such an approach risks privileging particular faith traditions in systems with broad societal reach.
  • Incentive misalignment: often the industries most in need of SinTech intervention have the strongest commercial incentives to resist it. Social media, gambling, ultra-processed food, tabacco, all have entrenched business models that militate against change of this sort.
  • Surveillance risk: accountability tools that monitor behaviour raise significant questions about privacy and consent, and the appropriate role of technology in our interior lives. For example, if health data gather from CGMs is owned by foreign companies and that nation become an adversary - or if that company decides to use such data as leverage for other interests - there could be significant personal cost for those reliant on such technology.
