Novomind AG (stylized as novomind) is a German-based software company that works in customer service, e-commerce, and digital communications. It was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Hamburg.[1] Novomind develops software for online shops, product information management (PIM) and customer service.[5][2][6][7]
Company structure
Stefan Grieben has been the company's CEO since January 1, 2022.[2] Novomind is an Aktiengesellschaft and therefore owned by its shareholders.[6] Founder Peter Samuelsen, who has since died, was the majority shareholder of the company until 2023.[2]
As of 2026, the company had over 500 employees in 8 locations. International branches are located in UAE, Egypt, France and Singapore.[4] In 2020, Deutsche Welle featured Novomind as an example in an article on flat corporate hierarchies.[8]
History
In 1999, Peter Samuelsen, an employee of a management consultancy, was commissioned to create an avatar, an early form of an online assistant, for a website. After completing the project, Samuelsen founded the company Novomind to develop similar applications.[1] Initially, the company created figures and avatars to guide website users,[9] then developed chatbots for online sales and expanded to customer service in social networks. With its work on chatbots in the late 1990s, it is considered one of the earliest AI development companies in Germany.[2] The company officially commenced operations in early 2000.[9]
By 2014, Novomind had around 180 employees and a revenue of €18 million.[10] By 2015, the company was based on Bramfelder Chaussee in Hamburg.[7]
In the 2022 financial year, Novomind increased its revenue by a double-digit percentage.[6] In the 2024 financial year, revenue remained stable at €57.7 million, while earnings before taxes rose by 42.3% to €6.5 million, the best result in the company's history.[3] Also in 2022, company founder Samuelsen retired from the company's management. He was succeeded by computer scientist Stefan Grieben, who had been working for the company since its foundation. Samuelsen remained the majority shareholder of the company[2] until his death in 2023.[11]
Products
Novomind works in the areas of digital commerce and customer service. Among other products, Novomind offers a shop system whose modules can be customized as required[12] and a PIM system that manages and organizes product information. This facilitates the maintenance and updating of product data.[5] Novomind is also working on automation in customer service, such as chatbots,[2] voicebots and email automation.[3] Clients include Volkswagen, the Otto Group, C&A and the DIY retailer Hagebau.[2][4] The software can be adjusted so data is only saved on national servers in compliance with national data protection laws.[4]
Awards
In 2013, Novomind was awarded the "Entrepreneur of the Year" award in the IT and media category, which is presented annually by Ernst & Young to medium-sized companies.[13][14]
