Boys and Girls is a 2006 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film directed by V. Rajagopal and starring Arjun Singh and Shyla Lopez. The film was released to mixed-to-negative reviews.

Plot

The film opens with an injured, homeless Kailash wandering aimlessly, smoking, and snorting a drug. He walks to H.M. Prison in London to meet his school teacher, Simran.

The film goes into a flashback to when Kailash was attending St. Johnson Junior College. Kailash's millionaire father, Rajesh, stalks Simran after first seeing her in the gym, since he has an infatuation for her. Meanwhile, Simran plays cards with her grandmother when her grandmother drops a king of diamonds card with the image of a software engineer named Kumar. Simran gets engaged to Kumar, and her grandmother decides their honeymoon will be in Switzerland. Simran returns from Switzerland, injured after Kumar died in an accident. Simran feels bad as she was genuinely in love with him.

A parallel track shows Kailash enjoying his time at college, interacting with his female friends and his best friend, Chandra. Simran joins St. Johnson Junior College and is Kailash's new teacher. Kailash slowly develops an infatuation for Simran, and, unbeknownst to him, his father also feels the same towards her. Kailash slowly starts to spend more time with Simran and gets her phone number, but Simran does not know that he loves her. Rajesh is shown to be a pervert and constantly looks at Simran's body features. One day Simran leaves the college, and Kailash inquires with one of the school workers about her, who happens to be Simran's friend. He, with the help of his friends, goes in search of her house. After Kailash enters his house and sees Simran, he is also in awe of her body features, like his father was. He tells her that he needs help with trigonometry, but she is surprised to see him pull out a book on sex instead.

Meanwhile, Rajesh meets Simran a few times. He starts a company called Kailash Air and influences Simran to join the company. Kailash enters Simran's house again, and upon seeing her clothes on the sofa, he puts them inside his pants, unable to control his infatuation for her. Simran keeps the relationship with Kailash formal, but after seeing Kailash cry, she kisses him, hoping to make him feel better. He takes her bra home as a symbol of his love for her. Kailash's grandmother is surprised to find various magazines with ladies on the cover on his bed. Two of Kailash's female friends, Keerthi and Christie, engage in a one-sided relationship with him, which Kailash uses as a means of escapism for the fact that he can't be with Simran. Kailash's mother, Khushboo, sees Rajesh engage with Simran in a jewelry shop, much to her despise.

Kailash continues to go to Simran for math tuition, but the teacher is confused about whether he is studying math or not. Kailash's mother gets mad at Kailash and his father after she finds out about their weird romantic behavior. An enraged Kailash's father storms to Simran's house and sexually assaults her. An enraged, injured Simran shoots him to death. Meanwhile, flashback to the present day: Kailash proposes his love to a pregnant Simran in jail. The film ends with a message about the importance of studying while in school and not falling in love during that time.

Release and reception

A critic called the film "A pragmatic picture".[citation needed] The film was dubbed into Telugu with the same name and released on 29 June 2007 alongside Chandrahas (2007).[4] Regarding the Telugu dubbed version, a critic wrote that "These kinds of films are best not released as they neither have entertainment value nor do they put out a message" and added that "If a filmmaker wants to educate the average filmgoer, he should not try to do it portraying the act itself. Mere skin show and obscene scenes doesn't serve as good entertainment. The scenes in the film are not related the Indian mind, mindset or way of functioning".[citation needed]
