The UEFA Women's Champions League match between Arsenal and VfL Wolfsburg, played at the Emirates Stadium in London on 1 May 2023,[1] broke the record attendance for a women's club football match in England[2][3] and a Women's Champions League match in England.[4] The former had stood since 1920 – when a Dick, Kerr Ladies 4–0 St Helens Ladies match at Goodison Park attracted a crowd of 53,000 people, a year before women's football on official pitches in England was banned by The Football Association[5] – and would be overtaken again less than two weeks later.[6]

It also represented the first time Arsenal W.F.C. had sold-out the Emirates Stadium.[7] [8] The record ticket sales seen at this match and other matches at the Emirates led to Arsenal announcing more games would be played at the Emirates in the following season.[9]

Match

Summary

The match was the second-leg of the semi-final in the UEFA Women's Champions League. The previous match ended 2-2. The Arsenal side named for the match were missing several starting players through an injury crisis that plagued their 2022–23 Arsenal W.F.C. season. The match was played with both VAR and Goal-line technology.[1]

The first half began with an early appeal for a Wolfsburg penalty after Lotte Wubben-Moy appeared to have handled the ball in the box. However, after VAR review, this was dismissed.

Shortly afterward, a pass from Lia Wälti bypassed the Wolfsburg defense and Stina Blackstenius slotted the ball into the net.

In the 41st minute, shortly before half-time, Jill Roord took a free kick, slotting it past the Arsenal goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger[10].

In the second half, Arsenal went ahead again after Blackstenius found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed due to a tight offside decision after VAR review.

In the 58th minute, Alexandra Popp scored from a corner, delivered by Felicitas Rauch putting Wolfsburg ahead for the first time in the match[11].

With 15 minutes left, Lotte Wubben-Moy delivered a ball with her weaker left foot to the head of Jen Beattie, who put it into the bottom left corner, levelling the game and taking it into extra time.

Arsenal suffered multiple injuries in the second-half. Their right-back, Laura Wienroither, and their striker, Stina Blackstenius, were substituted for injuries.[12]

At 119 minutes, with 1 minute of extra time left to play, Wolfsburg scored the winning goal, securing a place in the final.
