Αρχή λειτουργίας ενεργητικού σόναρ.

Τα ηχοεντοπιστικά συστήματα σόναρ (SO.N.A.R., SOund Navigation And Ranging, ελληνικά: ηχοπλοήγηση) είναι ηλεκτροακουστικές συσκευές που εκμεταλλεύονται τη διάδοση των κυμάτων ηχητικής ενέργειας μέσα στη θαλάσσια μάζα, όπως ακριβώς τα συστήματα ραντάρ και ηλεκτρονικού πολέμου εκμεταλλεύονται τη διάδοση των ηλεκτρομαγνητικών κυμάτων στην ατμόσφαιρα και γενικότερα στον ελεύθερο χώρο. Ο σκοπός των συστημάτων sonar είναι ο εντοπισμός/ανίχνευση, αναγνώριση/ταξινόμηση και παρακολούθηση υποβρυχίων σκαφών και διαφόρων αντικειμένων, η ακουστική χαρτογράφηση/τομογραφία του βυθού, η ναυτιλία πλοίων επιφανείας και υποβρυχίων καθώς επίσης οι υποθαλάσσιες επικοινωνίες & τηλεμετρία.

Υπάρχουν δύο μεγάλες κατηγορίες σόναρ, τα ενεργητικά και τα παθητικά.
