Καραβιά

Η Καραβιά ή Καράβια είναι συστάδα δύο βραχονησίδων του Μυρτώου πελάγους που πήρε το όνομα της απο το καπετάνιο Δημήτρη Καραβία που σώθηκε εκ θαύματος στο εν λόγω ναυάγιο της Κρήτης το 17ο αιώνα. Οι Καραβιάδες, Καραβαίοι ή Καραβίες ηταν μελη της γνωστής οικογένειας Καραβία παλαιάς και αρχοντικής οικογένειας της Ιθάκης και της Ακαρνανίας που σύμφωνα με ιστορικούς αποτελεί κλάδο της βυζαντινής οικογενείας των Καλλέργηδων της Κρήτης. Οι Καραβιάδες που ταξίδευαν με τρία πλοία έχοντας ως προορισμό τα Ιόνια νησιά, λόγω ισχυρών ρευμάτων στην περιοχή, άλλαξαν τη πορεία τους με αποτέλεσμα τα δύο από τα τρία πλοία να βουλιάξουν στο Μυρτώο πέλαγος προσκρούοντας στην βραχονησίδα.

Η Καραβιά είναι μία από τις τέσσερις βραχονησίδες του Μυρτώου πελάγους[1] [2], οι οποίες, σε συνδυασμό με ισχυρά θαλάσσια ρεύματα που υπάρχουν στην περιοχή, ακόμα και σε συνθήκες άπνοιας, έχουν κατά το παρελθόν αποτελέσει μεγάλο κίνδυνο για τη Ναυσιπλοΐα. Στα νερά του Μυρτώου πελάγους έχει σημειωθεί σημαντικό πλήθος ναυαγίων, με χαρακτηριστικότερο εκείνο του επιβατηγού - οχηματαγωγού πλοίου "Ηράκλειον", το 1966.[3]

Οι νησίδες χρησιμοποιούνται ως πεδίο βολής του Ελληνικού Πολεμικού Ναυτικού [4].
