Ο Έρνστ Μαχ (στα γερμανικά: Ernst Mach, 18 Φεβρουαρίου 1838 – 19 Φεβρουαρίου 1916) ήταν Αυστριακός-Τσέχος φυσικός και φιλόσοφος.[17] Προς τιμή του δόθηκε το όνομά του στη μονάδα μέτρησης της ταχύτητας του ήχου Μαχ. Επίσης είναι ο ιδρυτής του φιλοσοφικού ρεύματος του Μαχισμού.

Βιογραφία

Γεννήθηκε στο σημερινό Μπρνο της Τσεχίας. Μέχρι τα δεκατέσσερά του εκπαιδευόταν στο σπίτι του και αργότερα φοίτησε στο γυμνάσιο σποραδικά μέχρι την εισαγωγή του στο πανεπιστήμιο της Βιέννης στα 17 του χρόνια. Σπούδασε μαθηματικά, φυσική και φιλοσοφία και έλαβε διδακτορικό το 1860. Η αρχική του δουλειά εστιαζόταν στο Φαινόμενο Ντόπλερ στην οπτική και την ακουστική. Το 1864 κατέλαβε θέση καθηγητή μαθηματικών και αργότερα και φυσικής στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Γκρατς. Εκεί άρχισε να ασχολείται με τη φυσιολογία της αισθητικής αντίληψης. Το 1876 κατέλαβε την έδρα πειραματικής φυσικής στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Πράγας.

Το 1895 επέστρεψε στο πανεπιστήμιο της Βιέννης ως καθηγητής εφαρμοσμένης φιλοσοφίας, αλλά ένα πρόβλημα υγείας τον ανάγκασε να σταματήσει την ενεργή έρευνα το 1901, οπότε και εκλέχτηκε στο Αυστριακό Κοινοβούλιο. Συνέχισε παρ'όλα αυτά την έκδοση εργασιών και τις διαλέξεις. Πέθανε το 1916 στο Χάαρ της Γερμανίας.

Φυσική

Όλες του οι έρευνες αφορούσαν στην επίδραση, διάθλαση, περίθλαση και πόλωση του φωτός σε διάφορα οπτικά μέσα υπό την επήρεια εξωτερικών παραγόντων. Αργότερα ασχολήθηκε με την υπερηχητική ταχύτητα περιγράφοντας τα ηχητικά επακόλουθα μιας τέτοιας κίνησης. Τα συμπεράσματά του έπαιξαν μεγάλο ρόλο στην αεροδυναμική και την υδροδυναμική.

Φιλοσοφία

Ο Μαχ υπήρξε εισηγητής ενός νέου Εμπειριοκριτικού φιλοσοφικού ρεύματος που αποτελεί ποικιλία του υποκειμενικού ιδεαλισμού. Υποστήριζε ότι η Εμπειρία (που την όριζε ως σύνολο των ανθρώπινων εντυπώσεων και αισθημάτων) δεν έχει σχέση με την αντικειμενική πραγματικότητα. Την ύπαρξη της αντικειμενικής πραγματικότητας την θεωρούσε αδύνατη χωρίς το υποκείμενο (συνείδηση, αισθήματα). Ακόμα αρνιόταν την ύπαρξη αντικειμενικών φυσικών νόμων και αντικειμενικής αλήθειας. Οι αντιλήψεις του διαδόθηκαν σε πολλούς φυσικούς, που πίστεψαν ότι ανακαλύψεις όπως η διάσπαση του ατόμου και η κυματική φύση της ύλης αποδεικνύουν την "εξαφάνιση της ύλης". Σε συνέχεια της φιλοσοφικής του αντίληψης αντέδρασε στη πρόταση του Μπόλτσμαν για την ατομική θεωρία.

Στο βιβλίο του "Υλισμός και Εμπειριοκριτικισμός", ο Λένιν ασκώντας κριτική στον Αλεξάντερ Μπογκντάνωφ και στον Γιούσκεβιτς, που είχαν αποδεχτεί τον Μαχισμό, επιχειρηματολογεί ενάντια σε πολλές από τις φιλοσοφικές απόψεις του Μαχ με βάση τη φυσική επιστήμη.[18]
