The various levels of the scientific classification system.
Η ιεραρχία των οκτώ κύριων ταξινομικών βαθμίδων στην Συστηματική ταξινόμηση. Μία επικράτεια περιέχει ένα ή περισσότερα βασίλεια. Οι ενδιάμεσες βαθμίδες δεν συμπεριλαμβάνονται στο σχεδιάγραμμα .

Στην κλασική συστηματική ταξινόμηση ως βασίλειο (λατ.: Regnum) ονομάζεται η υψηλότερη κατηγορία της συστηματικής ταξινόμησης. Αρχικά όλα τα ζωντανά όντα διαιρούνταν μόνο σε Φυτά και Ζώα, αργότερα προστέθηκαν τα Πρώτιστα (Protista). Έπειτα προστέθηκαν τα Μονήρη και διαχωρίστηκαν οι Μύκητες από τα Φυτά. Τελευταία προστέθηκαν τα Αρχαιοβακτήρια. Αυτά τα 6 βασίλεια, βάσει γενετικών εξετάσεων, διαιρέθηκαν τελευταία σε τρία Υπερβασίλεια (Superregnum), σύμφωνα με το σχήμα. Σε βασίλεια διαιρούνται μόνον τα Ευκάρυα (ευκαρυώτες).

Το βασίλειο αποτελείται από ταξινομικές βαθμίδες, τις συνομοταξίες, που είναι συγγενείς μεταξύ τους. Μεταξύ συνομοταξιών και βασιλείου υπάρχουν άλλες κατηγορίες· οι πιο κοντινές στο βασίλειο είναι το Υποβασίλειο (Subregnum) και το Ανθυποβασίλειο (Infraregnum).

Σύγχρονες έρευνες καταργούν το βασίλειο των Πρωτίστων και το αντικαθιστούν με τις υπερομάδες (ή τα ανθυποβασίλεια): Χρωμοκυψελιδωτά (Chromalveolata), Αμοιβόζωα (Amoebozoa), Αυλακωτά (Excavata) και Ριζωτά (Rhizaria). Οι άλλες δύο ευκαρυωτικές υπερομάδες είναι τα Αρχαιοπλαστωτά (Archaeoplastida), τα οποία συμπεριλαμβάνουν τo βασίλειo των Φυτών (Plantae), και τα Οπισθόκοντα (Opisthokonta), τα οποία συμπεριλαμβάνουν τα βασίλεια των Ζώων (Animalia) και των Μυκήτων (Fungi).
