Στη Χημεία με τον όρο αρωματικότητα ή αρωματικός χαρακτήρας προσδιορίζεται το σύνολο των χαρακτηριστικών ιδιοτήτων, χημικής συμπεριφοράς, ειδικών ενώσεων που χαρακτηρίζονται αρωματικές ενώσεις και ειδικότερα στη χαμηλή τους δραστικότητα που οφείλεται στην ηλεκτρονική δομή των μορίων τους κατά το σχηματισμό δακτυλίου από άτομα άνθρακα. Κατά κανόνα τα μόρια μιας αρωματικής ένωσης περιέχουν ένα δακτύλιο από έξι άτομα άνθρακα που συνδέονται μεταξύ τους με απλούς ή διπλούς ομοιοπολικούς δεσμούς, ο δε σχηματιζόμενος δακτύλιος μπορεί να συνδέεται με άλλους δακτυλίους ή με αλυσίδες ατόμων. Στο συντακτικό τύπο της αρωματικής ένωσης ο δακτύλιος των έξι ατόμων άνθρακα συμβολίζεται με εξάγωνο.

Κυριότερες ιδιότητες αρωματικού χαρακτήρα είναι:

  1. Ο δακτύλιος του μορίου εμφανίζεται σταθερός ως κεκορεσμένος ενώ δεν είναι.
  2. Οι αρωματικές ενώσεις σε αντίθεση με τις άκυκλες ακόρεστες ενώσεις παρέχουν προϊόντα υποκατάστασης και όχι προσθήκης.
  3. Οι αρωματικές αλκοόλες (φαινόλες) εμφανίζουν πολύ ισχυρότερο όξινο χαρακτήρα σε αντίθεση με τις άκυκλες αλκοόλες.
  4. Οι αρωματικές αμίνες χαρακτηρίζονται λιγότερο βασικές στη χημική συμπεριφορά τους από τις άκυκλες αμίνες, όπου με νιτρώδες οξύ αρχικά παράγουν διαζωνικά άλατα τα οποία στη συνέχεια διασπώνται σε φαινόλες.

Κανόνας Huckel: Για να παρουσιάζει αρωματικό χαρακτήρα, ένα επίπεδο κυκλικό συζυγιακό σύστημα, πρέπει να περιέχει 4n+2 (όπου n φυσικός αριθμός) π ηλεκτρόνια, ενώ αν περιέχει 4n είναι αντιαρωματικό (ασταθές).

Σύμφωνα με τον παραπάνω κανόνα για ένταξη στις αρωματικές ενώσεις πρέπει ένα τμήμα (τουλάχιστον) της ένωσης να πληροί τις ακόλουθες προϋποθέσεις:

  1. Να είναι κυκλικό σύστημα.
  2. Όλα τα άτομα του κυκλικού συστήματος να είναι ομοεπίπεδα.
  3. Να περιέχει το μέγιστο δυνατό αριθμό συζυγών πολλαπλών (συνήθως διπλών) δεσμών.
  4. Ο αριθμός των ηλεκτρονίων στα π συζυγή τροχιακά του συστήματος να καλύπτει τον τύπο 4n+2 (όπου n φυσικός αριθμός).
  5. Στη συζυγία και στον αριθμό των ηλεκτρονίων μετρούν και τυχόν μονήρη ζεύγη, από ετεροάτομα που μετέχουν στο δακτύλιο.

Στις αρωματικές ενώσεις περιλαμβάνεται το βενζόλιο και η φαινόλη και τα παράγωγά τους. Οι ενώσεις αυτές ονομάστηκαν αρωματικές από την βαριά οσμή που αναδίδουν, και που βεβαίως ουδεμία σχέση έχει με τα γνωστά αρώματα.
