Ολμέκοι

Οι Ολμέκοι ήταν ο πρώτος μεγάλος πολιτισμός του Μεξικού, με έδρα τους την περιοχή Σοκονούσκο[1] και Τρες Σαπότες, στην σημερινή τοποθεσία της Βερακρούς και της Ταμπάσκο. Στις τροπικές πεδινές περιοχές του νοτιοκεντρικού Μεξικού όπου ζούσαν, ο πολιτισμός τους αναπτύχθηκε από το 1500 π.Χ. έως το περίπου 400 π.Χ.. Στο σημείο προϋπήρχαν παλαιότεροι πολιτισμοί ήδη από το 2500 π.Χ., οι οποίοι και εκτοπίστηκαν με την ανάδειξη των Ολμέκων[2]. Ως ο αρχαιότερος πολιτισμός της Κεντρικής Αμερικής, επηρέασε σημαντικά πολλούς από τους μετέπειτα πολιτισμούς που τον ακολούθησαν, και έθεσε τα θεμέλια τους[3]. Ανάμεσα στα χαρακτηριστικά αυτής της επιρροής είναι οι τελετουργικές αιματοχυσίες προς θεότητες[4], καθώς και το αρχαίο κεντροαμερικανικού τύπου παιχνίδι της μπάλας[5], χαρακτηριστικά τα οποία συναντώνται και στους μετέπειτα πολιτισμούς της Κεντρικής Αμερικής.

Οι πιο χαρακτηριστικές καλλιτεχνικές δημιουργίες των Ολμέκων είναι τα γλυπτά των κολοσσιαίων κεφαλών[2], με το ύψος τους να φτάνει έως και τα 3 μέτρα, και τα μεγαλύτερα γλυπτά των κεφαλών να ζυγίζουν από 25 έως και 55 τόνους[6]. Ως προς τα επιστημονικά επιτεύγματα τους, έχει υποστηριχτεί βάσει αρχαιολογικών ευρημάτων πως οι Ολμέκοι γνωρίζαν την έννοια του αριθμού 0 [2], πριν τον πολιτισμό των Μάγια, και ανεξάρτητα από αυτούς των Βαβυλωνίων και Ινδών στον Παλαιό Κόσμο.
