Τρισδιάστατη δομή του θειοκυανικού οξέος

Το Θειοκυανικό οξύ είναι οργανική ένωση που συνίσταται από άνθρακα, άζωτο, θείο και υδρογόνο. Εμφανίζεται υπό δύο ταυτομερείς μορφές:

  1. ως "θειοκυανικό οξύ", (HSCN) και
  2. ως "θειοϊσοκυανικό οξύ" (SCNH)

Συνέπεια αυτών είναι να παρατηρούνται δύο ειδών αλκυλοπαράγωγα.

Το θειοκυανικό οξύ παρασκευάζεται δι΄ απόσταξης ξηρού θειοκυανικού καλίου με όξινο θειικό κάλιο σε κενό, απορροφημένου του υδρογόνου. Μέχρι θερμοκρασίας 0 °C παραμένει λευκή κρυσταλλική μάζα σταθερή για μερικές ώρες. Αυξανόμενης όμως της θερμοκρασίας μετατρέπεται σε ερυθρό τήγμα όπου σε λίγα λεπτά και εντελώς αιφνίδια στερεοποιείται σε μορφή κίτρινων βελόνων εκλύοντας θερμότητα.

Το Θειοκυανικό οξύ είναι ελαφρά δηλητηριώδες με διαπεραστική οσμή. Σε αραιό υδατικό διάλυμα (περίπου 5%) παρουσιάζει σταθερή μορφή ενώ σε πυκνότερα διαλύματα διασπάται σε υδροκυάνιο και στην ετεροκυκλική ένωση υδροξανθάνιο. Γενικά παρουσιάζει την ίδια οξύτητα με τα υδραλογονικά οξέα, εξ ου και καλείται επίσης "υδρορροδανικό οξύ". Τα δε άλατά του, καλούμενα θειοκυανικά ή ροδανίδια είναι ιδιαίτερα σπουδαία στην οργανική και ανόργανη χημεία.

Σε ελεύθερη μορφή ανιχνεύεται ελαφρά όξινο στο χυμό των κρεμμυδιών, και υπό μορφή αλάτων στο σίελο, στο στομαχικό υγρό, τα ούρα, το αίμα και στα σχετικά με αυτά όργανα του οργανισμού.
