Η Ηλεκτροχημεία είναι ο δυναμικός επιστημονικός κλάδος της Χημείας που σχετίζεται με τον ηλεκτρισμό.

Ο ηλεκτρισμός κατέχει σημαντική θέση και ρόλο στη Χημεία γιατί πολλές χημικές ενώσεις συγκροτούνται από ηλεκτρικά φορτισμένα σωματίδια που λέγονται ιόντα. Στη πράξη για παράδειγμα η μπαταρία αξιοποιεί μια χημική αντίδραση για να παράγει ηλεκτρισμό. Ακόμη με τη βοήθεια του ηλεκτρισμού μπορεί να διασπασθεί μια χημική ένωση όπως συμβαίνει στην ηλεκτρόλυση. Έτσι κύριο αντικείμενο μελέτης και έρευνας της Ηλεκτροχημείας είναι οι ηλεκτροχημικές αντιδράσεις που συντελούνται είτε με διέλευση ηλεκτρικού ρεύματος (ηλεκτρόλυση), είτε εκείνες που παράγουν ηλεκτρικό ρεύμα (τα ηλεκτροχημικά στοιχεία ή οι λεγόμενες μπαταρίες)

Για παράδειγμα το νερό που είναι μια χημική ένωση και αποτελείται από υδρογόνο και οξυγόνο, με κατάλληλη ηλεκτρολυτική συσκευή μπορεί να διαχωρισθεί στα συστατικά του. Την χημική αντίδραση της παραγωγής αυτής μελετά η Ηλεκτροχημεία καθώς και όλες εκείνες που συμβαίνουν στις διάφορες επιμεταλλώσεις.
