Βωτθαίος

Ο Βωτθαίος ή Βοτθαίος[α] (πιθανώς έζησε μεταξύ 400 και 300 ΠΚΕ)[2] ήταν αρχαίος συγγραφέας ενός περίπλου του οποίου το όνομα του καταγράφεται μόνο μία φορά.[2][3][β] Τον αναφέρει ο Μαρκιανός στην επιτομή του περίπλου του Μένιππου του Περγαμηνού.[3] Στο έργο του Μαρκιανού αναφέρεται ότι ο Βοτθαίος και ο Σκύλαξ ο Καρυανδεύς χρησιμοποίησαν ημέρες ταξιδιού και όχι στάδια για να δηλώσουν αποστάσεις.[2]

  1. ↑ Ο Μίλλερ θεωρεί το όνομα αλλοιωμένο, και πιθανολογεί ότι μπορεί να σχετίζεται με το Βουθήρας, επίθετο του συγγραφέα Λύκου από το Ρήγιο ή το Βοττιαίος, μακεδονικό εθνικό όνομα.[1] Τις ίδιες πιθανότητες δέχεται και ο Keyser προκρίνοντας όμως την πιθανότητα να σχετίζεται με το θέμα Βοήθαι- ή Βόθθαι- το οποίο να «διορθώθηκε» σε Βώτθαι-.[2]
